  • S2E2: Homebrewing JLo's Booty

    04/02/2016 Duración: 51min

This week on SBR I talk to Nathan Church and Loc Trinh, founders of Artisan Brew Club. Artisan Brew Club is a subscription box, but not just any subscription box. Every other month, instead of getting stuff to clutter your shelves, you get stuff to brew your own beer! Nate and Loc tell us all about it and I also review Sierra Nevada's Beer Camp Tropical IPA.  Tropical IPABrewed by:Sierra NevadaStyle | ABVIPA | 6.7%Description: Beer Camp is the ultimate brewing experience. We invite beer fans into our brewery nearly every week to design their own beer and then we bring it to life. Each spring, we’ll feature one of our favorite collaborations from the previous year. This year’s selection features intensely aromatic hop varietals rich with the flavors of the tropics. We use Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado hops to create bright fruit-forward flavors of mango, papaya and bitter orange. 20/01/2016 Duración: 18min

Welcome to the first episode in a new season of Southern Beer Review. On this episode I review Sweet Baby Jesus! from DuClaw Brewing out of Baltimore, MD. This week's topic is a rather touchy subject and revolves around the boycotting of craft breweries with ties to corporate beer. Should we boycott them, or not? If you want to weigh in on the conversation or just say what's up, call me at 678-902-BEER and leave a voicemail. You can also record your own audio and email the file to southernbeermag@gmail.com. 17/06/2015 Duración: 09min

On this episode we review Smells Like A Safety Meeting from Dark Horse Brewing out of Marshall, MI! We've heard the hype about this brewery, but does it live up to it? Smells Like A Safety MeetingBrewed by:Dark Horse BrewingMarshall, MIStyle | ABVIPA | 8.5%Description: Our most Aromatic IPA. An 8.5% India Pale Ale that is very reminiscent of the hop’s cousin in the Mulberry family. Lots of hop aroma with just the right amount of bitterness as we still like our balance around here. Between the secret blend of the most DANK hops that we can get our hands on and a "more than healthy" dose of double dry hopping, this beer can be announced to the nose from across the room that someone is definitely having a Safety Meeting.Subscribe to the Podcast: Stitcher - http://bit.ly/sbrstitcher iTunes - http://bit.ly/SBRitunes Pocket Casts - http://bit.ly/sbrpocket RSS - http://southernbeer.libsyn.com/rss Social Links: Twitter - http://twitter.com/sbrtv Facebook - http://facbook.com/

    11/06/2015 Duración: 11min

After a fairly long hiatus, we return with a new format. We will be releasing two short episodes every week; one on Mondays and one on Thursdays that we call the Thirsty Thursday Edition. For this episode we're reviewing Carnevale from The Lost Abbey.CarnevaleBrewed by:The Lost AbbeySan Marcos, CAStyle | ABVSaison | 8%Brewed in celebration of Lent and Easter season, Carnevale is light bodied Saison, using Brettanomyces along with Amarillo and Simcoe hops to generate flavor and depth. ABV: 6.5% Tasting Notes: AROMA: Moderately spicy nose with hints of tropical fruits and toasted biscuits. Some tangerine and apricot help round out the citrus notes. TASTE: Mildly sweet with subtle pop, the carbonation helps introduce the deep flavor of brett to the palate. Pouring a deep mahogany, the mouthfeel will get you puckering while the smooth finish will get you smiling. We tried all kinds of wacky solutions including a continuous onslaught of ice bags but we just weren’t getting the results we desired. We were introduced to a unique and underutilized lager yeast strain that has the ability to ferment at higher temperatures. Once we brewed our first batch with this yeast we fell in love with the ability to reach the smoothness of a lager while still obtaining the full flavor of an ale. After we brewed countless versions of our Pilsner we landed on a special

Fort Collins, CO Style | ABV: Sour Ale | 7.5% Description: Le Terroir: French, meaning from the terrain, soil, land, ground, earth. You may have heard it as a wine term speaking of the environmental conditions of the vineyard, the pH of the soil, even the slope of the land. But beer has it too, especially a New Belgium sour beer, which oozes terroir from the pores of the wooden foeders we age it in. They produce a base beer that's golden-colored with a soft overripe peach aroma and just the right amount of tart. And after 3 years in the foeders, you can bet it has some nice earthy tones. Round out that fruity base with even more unique fruity hops like Amarillo and citra, and this beer may just have more terroir than your c

    21/01/2015 Duración: 13min

On this episode of Southern Beer Review James reviews Terrapin Beer Co.'s Turtleneck Gingerbread Winter Warmer Ale. This is volume 24 in their Side Project series. From the press release:The Employee Homebrew Challenge is the brainchild of Terrapin VP Sales/Marketing Dustin Watts. The Challenge splits all Terrapin employees into assigned teams containing members from each department. The mission is straightforward: formulate a beer recipe and brew a 5-gallon batch, choose a name, design a label concept, develop a marketing strategy, and present the brew as creatively as possible in a skit to all coworkers and a panel of judges at the company holiday party. There are no style guidelines or rules, though the project must fit the “Side Project” line of inventive, unique beers, must be feasibly brewed on a commercial level, and all aspects of the project (brew ingredients, marketing materials, etc.) must stay within the provided $75 budget. The Review:Turtleneck Gingerbread Winter Warmer
