John 6:1-21 “Jesus is Majestic” In our Sunday Bible Study at Calvary Fellowship, Pastor Andy Falleur read from John 6:1-21, the familiar stories of Jesus feeding the five thousand and then immediately afterwards walking on water. The historicity of these events are solid, and it was good to take a fresh look at them, especially in the way that John tells the story, and especially in light of all that’s going on in the world around us today. In the study, we did take some time to examine some of the layers of meaning that John is alluding to in the details that he includes. This is a recording from the courtyard at Calvary, so there may be interesting additional sounds as it’s an outdoor event. In our Bible Study this Sunday at Calvary Fellowship, Pastor Andy Falleur read to us from John 5:31-47, where we once again returned to Jesus’s Monologue to the Jewish Leaders. In reading the whole monologue, Jesus makes 4 claims to divinity, and then discusses the testimony, the proof, the evidence that his claims to divinity are valid. In the closing portion of the monologue, Jesus switch’s from defense to offense and shows how his accusers, the Jewish leaders were the ones that were illegitimate, and in fact posers, pretenders. This was also our first outdoor church gathering in the courtyard in front of our entrance. This allowed us to gather a greater number of people under the current pandemic restrictions. It was a gorgeous day. The audio is interesting from this day, because there is no sound amplification, just the natural voice. John5:17-47 - Jesus Can't be Cancelled In our Bible Study at Calvary Fellowship of Ottawa, Andy Falleur continued in John 5, where Jesus makes by his count, four claims to divinity. He says to the Jewish leaders not only that He is the Messiah, but that He is equal to God. We spent our time looking at those claims and what Jesus is saying and what that means to them and to us. In the the next episode, we will look at the evidence He provides to prove His claim, and then how Jesus will expose who they actually are. John 5:1-16 “Pickup Your Mat” Our Bible Study this Sunday at Calvary Fellowship of Ottawa was from John 5:1-16, where Jesus heals a disabled man at the pool of Bethesda. We took a few minutes to talk about the manuscript variation there, and then saw the connection through contrast with the healing of the official’s son at the end of John 4. Beyond this, we briefly touched on one of the layers that John the Beloved might be alluding to in the way that he relays this event in the life of Jesus. In all of this, it’s clear that Jesus word has power to bring us to wellness that the Law will never had. We closed by looking at disability and suffering as a Christian. John 4:43-54 In this Bible study, of John 4:43 - 4:54, we saw how the Galileans seemed to welcome Jesus with great excitement, but only wanted him for what he could do for them and did not honour him, treasure him, or believe in him as Messiah. This contrasts with the faith of the Samaritans who took him at his Word. This passage shows how familiarity can cause us to be far from Jesus, even as it makes us feel like we are close to him. This is especially a warning for those among us who have been Christians for some time. The Galileans had been around Jesus much more than the Samaritans and they took him for granted. But this isn't inevitable. We saw how there was another Galilean who treasured Jesus and was close to Jesus even though he was the most familiar with him. This is John the one recording this true story. We ended by looking at John's words in Revelation about his yearning for Jesus to return and concluded by praying for God to awaken a yearning for him. Ephesians 1 - Trinity - Who is God In this Bible study at Calvary Fellowship in Ottawa, Kristian Landry takes us through a Bible study on the Holy Trinity. The Trinity is hinted at in the OT, but revealed in the Incarnation of the Son and outpouring of the Spirit. Christians have disagreed on many things, but we all agree on this. In the one being of God, there are three divine Persons: the Father, the Son and the Spirit. The simplest way to begin thinking of the Trinity is actually to think of the gospel. God is love. Love gives. The Father gives us His Son. The Son gives us His life. Together, Father and Son give us the Holy Spirit. And the fruit of the Spirit is love. We love the Father, experience the grace of Christ and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. John 2:23 - 3:22 - God Loved In this Bible study, of John 2:23 - 3:22, we saw how Jesus didn’t “entrust” himself to the people that believed in him, and our natural question is why. We explored some of the reasons that have been offered and then examined how John the Apostle tells of the conversation that Jesus had with Nicodemus in the following section. We saw the need for each person to be “born again.” And, then we looked at how Jesus expected Nicodemus to know what He was talking about. We saw the likely connection back to Ezekiel 36-37. We compared Nicodemus to the Samaritan Woman, and then lastly looked at how God loved the world, but the world loved darkness. In our text today, John the Baptist proclaims two baptisms. There’s one that he’s doing with water, but he’s pointing to one that Jesus will do with the Holy Spirit. Here we look at baptism, it’s significance and importance and it’s symbolism throughout Scripture. This helps us to understand what’s not explained in John’s gospel. Are there two baptisms? Are these two events? Why was John baptizing? What is the baptism of the Spirit? Have I been baptized by the Holy Spirit? And, is this even possible in our days? John 1:1-18 “Get Used to Different” In our Bible Study through these opening paragraphs of the gospel of John, we immediately see how different John’s gospel is from the other three. It’s really different. It’s believed to be the last document of the New Testament and it shows that John the Beloved has had a lot of time to think and meditate on Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. In this preamble, we noticed some of the motif’s and ways that John communicates the truths of Jesus.
