Some years are just better than others, and this year for Oklahoma native Ty Batie was one of those years.  On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles we talk to Ty about his 2020 archery season where he tagged out on two giant whitetails and a big South Dakota mule deer. Most of the episode is dedicated to his two year quest chasing a large buck that lived on the same property he recently moved a house on to. The guys discuss the entire process of locating this bucks core area, setting up trail cameras, and figuring out his travel routine. And like most deer, there was a period of time where Ty thought this buck had been shot as he disappeared for a period of time before he located him once again. He then finishes putting the pieces of the puzzle together and get the encounter he had been waiting for. He also share the story of an incredible spot and stalk mule deer hunt in the middle of a crop pivot using a decoy that was mounted to his bow.  And... yet another whitetail hunt. Todd Havel from Wisconsin is the guest on this podcast. He's spent decades hunting and tracking mature bucks in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. The conversation we had went into enough detail that it made sense to split into two parts. In the first part, Todd talks about his experiences tracking, and breaking down the habitat and tendencies of older bucks. Todd has witnessed them doing things differently than other deer. They spend most of the year in a tight area, but tracking during the rut gives a great opportunity to locate what otherwise would be a hard-to-find deer.  We discuss habitat features, sign that might be left, and tracking skillsets, with several examples. For instance, what happens when there isn't any snow? How far will a mature buck travel in a day? What do they do before bedding down? How do you practice being able to take a quick shot? Brenden breaks down where this buck lived, the terrain features this buck used to travel from from different properties, and how food plots and mowed paths played a role in keeping him on the farm. Lastly, he shares with us how trail cameras allowed him to pinpoint this bucks movement and eventually leading to a shot opportunity. On this episode of South Dakota Unlimited, CJ talks with Greg Van Den Berg from the Sioux Falls area all about turkey hunting, as South Dakota’s season really starts to heat up. Greg has a love for hunting, and turkey hunting tends to be one of his favorites ever since it got him started in the hunting world in college. Greg and CJ talk some turkey gear, calling, and some different tactics used in the wide variety of terrain types turkey can be found in this state. Greg also has a passion for conservation and is very active in the organizations that support conservation not only on a state level but also a national level. Greg is the president of the Sioux Falls chapter of NWTF, on the national board for the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance, and a committee member for 2% For Conservation, which Sportsmen’s Nation is a part of as well. This week on the show we talked through our turkey season preparations for the 2021 spring season.  Jason discussed how in previous years he has used a very mobile hunting strategy with minimal success and that he plans to change his strategy this year with hopes of seeing more birds.  Jacob has never successfully harvested a turkey so he plans to harvest any legal bird using any strategy that is successful.  Jeff has had the most success out of the group with spring turkey, so he plans to use the same strategies he has used in the past with hopes of continued success.  We also discuss a few small changes to our setups and calls that we are hoping will lead to more birds down.    Ohio Huntsman  is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. We extend the Wild Turkey Podcast series this week to complete a pre-hunt “What’s in your turkey vest Podcast? This podcast reviews the diaphragm calls, friction type calls, locator calls, and the gear we chose to carry.  We tend to be prepared, but still pack light. We want to make sure that any scenario we face that we have the call or sound we can produce in our vest. Although this podcast is focused from the SouthEast United States, we expound on the necessity of woody structure in your habitat for encourage daylight deer activity and security.
