This week on the show we discuss how to pattern a shotgun.  Anyone who has ever looked online for tips on patterning a shotgun knows there is varying information depending on where you look.  We mainly focused on patterning for turkey season specifically but the same general concepts apply to all shotguns and choke/shell combinations.  We discussed what size shot we typically use for turkey hunting and also what the positives and negatives are for each size.  We also discussed what distances we typically pattern our guns out to and what our reasoning is for limiting ourselves to those distances.  We then discuss what we use for targets and also how many BBs we like to see in the "kill zone" to feel comfortable at a given distance.   Ohio Huntsman is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. This week was the kickoff to Missouri spring turkey season and we couldn't have been more excited. It's a 12 month process of habitat work and planning to ensure the population is healthy and sustainable. It hasn't always been this way though, there have been recent seasons of past that forced us into hunting other farms to give what few turkeys there were a break. The population has rebounded and we're in for a fun season!  Opening day of season was kicked off with the production team of Slate + Glass filming for the National Wild Turkey Federation online show "Turkey Call." With birds roosted the night prior by Chainsaw Chad we felt we had a great chance. Keep in mind this was our first official hunt as the landowners of this property, so that morning had more meaning that others. TJ Norman and his family had a 2020 deer season for the ages. They drew 6 controlled hunt deer tags in North Western Oklahoma and put the time and effort into making the most of them. TJ himself was fortunate enough to tag not one but two mule deer in a state that most people don't know mule deer exist, much less that you can hunt them. Jared Gortsema and James Zandstra are hunting partners and creators of the Bowga Hunting Podcast.  The two are native Michiganders who enjoy the thrill of exploring public land and pursuing game.  Their passion for being sportsmen has led them to Wisconsin for public land whitetails.  Jared takes a real liking to scouting and working the chess match for mature bucks.  Another adventure of theirs, takes them to the mountains of West Virginia to hunt black bear.  James is a traditional enthusiast, hunting with a recurve.  He was able to take a bear with that recurve. Some years are just better than others, and this year for Oklahoma native Ty Batie was one of those years.  On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles we talk to Ty about his 2020 archery season where he tagged out on two giant whitetails and a big South Dakota mule deer. Most of the episode is dedicated to his two year quest chasing a large buck that lived on the same property he recently moved a house on to. The guys discuss the entire process of locating this bucks core area, setting up trail cameras, and figuring out his travel routine. And like most deer, there was a period of time where Ty thought this buck had been shot as he disappeared for a period of time before he located him once again. He then finishes putting the pieces of the puzzle together and get the encounter he had been waiting for. He also share the story of an incredible spot and stalk mule deer hunt in the middle of a crop pivot using a decoy that was mounted to his bow.  And... yet another whitetail hunt. Todd Havel from Wisconsin is the guest on this podcast. He's spent decades hunting and tracking mature bucks in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. The conversation we had went into enough detail that it made sense to split into two parts. In the first part, Todd talks about his experiences tracking, and breaking down the habitat and tendencies of older bucks. Todd has witnessed them doing things differently than other deer. They spend most of the year in a tight area, but tracking during the rut gives a great opportunity to locate what otherwise would be a hard-to-find deer.  We discuss habitat features, sign that might be left, and tracking skillsets, with several examples.
