  • DIY Sportsman - Tracking Mature Bucks with Todd Havel Pt. 2

    06/05/2021 Duración: 56min

In this episode, Todd talks about some of the experiences he's had starting up bowhunting again more recently. Much of the knowledge he's gained over the years tracking fed right into his archery strategy, and he was able to tag a nice buck. It wasn't without its own set of challenges however. Notably, Todd talked about how hunting pressure from guys who had a similar hunting style caused some challenges he wasn't used to from rifle hunting.  We discuss the relative ease of patterning specific bucks in the big woods. Todd feels that there is a common misconception of those deer being nomadic, but he finds that the commonly repeat the exact same things year after year, without minor disturbances like crop rotation present to alter patterns. We talk boots on the ground and trail camera strategies to learn those patterns and take advantage of them.    DIY Sportsman is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. • Ohio Huntsman - Cloning For Conservation

    05/05/2021 Duración: 01h10min

This week on the show our resident wildlife biologist (Jeff) talks about cloning a black-footed ferret and what that means for the future of conservation.  The black-footed ferret was thought to be extinct from the wild until a small remaining population was discovered.  Scientists were then able to clone a female black-footed ferret using frozen DNA samples in order to add genetic diversity to the remaining population.  This potentially can lead to a whole new area and focus in the world of conservation as they would be able to bring animals back from extinction with science.  We also spent some time discussing if we thought it would be a good idea to bring extinct animals back onto the landscapes.  The age old saying of "just because we can..doesn't necessarily mean we should" applies very well to this topic as many species are extinct because the current landscape is not able to support them any longer or at least not in the capacity that it once did.  We also discuss some other species that are currently

  • Land & Legacy - Convictions From Lifelong Land Managers

    04/05/2021 Duración: 01h02min

We commonly think of the criminal activity surrounding the definition, however, it has meaning regarding how someone feels convinced about certain truthful information. So on this week, we share our convictions about land management.  Our goal is to share truthful information that will make the land and its resources better. So, we go deep into our understanding of truth behind the management of natural resources and God's Creation. These convictions are the check and balance sheet for us! When we examine practices or ideas we run them past our convictions or the truths/foundations of sound land management to make sure we are completing the best management practices that science supports.  If you want to learn the truths or our convictions about how the way land and wildlife should be managed, give this a listen! #ForLoveoftheLand    Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. This week was the kickoff to Missouri spring turkey season and we couldn't have been more excited. It's a 12 month process of habitat work and planning to ensure the population is healthy and sustainable. It hasn't always been this way though, there have been recent seasons of past that forced us into hunting other farms to give what few turkeys there were a break. The population has rebounded and we're in for a fun season!  Opening day of season was kicked off with the production team of Slate + Glass filming for the National Wild Turkey Federation online show "Turkey Call." With birds roosted the night prior by Chainsaw Chad we felt we had a great chance. Keep in mind this was our first official hunt as the landowners of this property, so that morning had more meaning that others. As a landowner there is a responsibility to ensure you're doing what's beneficial for the landscape, not just what you want. We've been managing this farm over the years with timber thinning, burning, prescribed fire, and of cours

Jared Gortsema and James Zandstra are hunting partners and creators of the Bowga Hunting Podcast.  The two are native Michiganders who enjoy the thrill of exploring public land and pursuing game.  Their passion for being sportsmen has led them to Wisconsin for public land whitetails.  Jared takes a real liking to scouting and working the chess match for mature bucks.  Another adventure of theirs, takes them to the mountains of West Virginia to hunt black bear.  James is a traditional enthusiast, hunting with a recurve.  He was able to take a bear with that recurve. Both Jared and James enjoy the opportunity to bring home wholesome wild protein to their families.  Being spring, Nick wanted to get their thoughts on what they are doing with their turkey.  James tossed around the idea of making his bird last longer, by making sausage that he could freeze and use throughout the year.  He is also not opposed to smoking a breast and and going cold cut style.  Thin slices with some spicy homemade mayo.  Jared is thin
