On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with the Urban Bowman, Taylor Chamberlin of Washington D.C. about deer trends he has identified throughout the years while bowhunting.  Taylor hunts over 150 days each year in an area where the deer head is very overpopulated and the tag allocation is liberal to say the least. They guys kick off the episode with Taylor talking about trends that he sees after a deer has been shot. They discuss the difference is the deers reaction depending on if it was a heart, lungs, liver, or gut shot.  With that many days in a tree he spends a lot of time just observing deer behavior. Taylor talks about how deer react to pressure, how they move through terrain, and also shares some crazy stories behind the bow. Trail cameras are the topic of today's discussion. In particular, I'll be talking about summer strategies on public land. It seems like much of the info we hear on summer trail cameras focuses around putting them in high visibility areas, along field edges, fence rows, or next to minerals. Well, what if you don't have access to agriculture? What if minerals or other feed is illegal on the land that you hunt? What if you're afraid of theft in high traffic areas? Well, today I'm going to outline some alternative strategies that I'll be employing throughout the summer to try and inventory several different pieces of public across multiple states to get a good preparation for the upcoming season.   In addition to discussing what some of the higher odds locations to place those cameras might be, I also talk about camera density in an area, how to minimize false triggers, maximize the number of true triggers, and how to keep those pesky ants from destroying your camera electronics.   DIY Sportsman is Powered by Sim

This week on the show we discussed some updates on our spring turkey seasons.  Jason walked us through his last turkey hunt and Jeff also discussed his latest attempts to bag a spring gobbler.  We then discussed the importance of hunting land and specifically access to that land long term.  We have seen first hand and heard countless examples of guys who have had access to land on word of mouth or permission and then lose that access to that land.  We discussed how important it has become to do whatever you can to acquire land that you own in order to ensure your future hunting and also ensure your family has land to hunt in the future.  We also cover that even leased land is not a guarantee that it will always be available for you to lease and that if able you would be better off annual lease money into purchasing your own land.   Ohio Huntsman is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. Where have all the turkeys gone?! It's a common question we've been hearing through much of the United States and it's a very complex answer. We decided to check in this week with some of the most popular hunters in Missouri who have hunted here for many years to see what trends they've witnessed and things they're doing to help improve turkey numbers.  Mark Drury of Drury Outdoors has been at the top of our list for successful turkey hunters for a long time. Going back to the days when Adam filmed for Drury Outdoors he's always respected the passion Mark has for the wild turkey. MArk continues to have a successful spring even with numbers down statewide, so we're getting to the bottom of why?  Next up Michael Hunsucker and Shawn Luchtel from Heartland Bowhunter have seen a drastic difference in turkey numbers from the early 2000s and it's quite concerning to them. On this week's podcast, we discuss some recent findings on our consultation trips. These times in the field are priceless with countless observations of how wildlife are utilizing certain habitat features. One of the more reoccurring things we see are isolated and routinely used beds, often referred to as "buck beds".  Buck Beds have gotten a lot of attention lately, however, one of the most missed features of this is that adequate cover is often limited. When quality cover is limited, we see routine beds, often used day in and day out. Although consistent bedding is good, having abundant, quality, secure, cover is even better.  The next time you find a buck bed, look at the structure, consider how to create more of that on the landscape as opposed to how can you hunt that location? Most Oklahomans would consider filling both buck tags a very successful season. Tyrell Roy did that and more in 2020 by adding a successful draw hunt to the mix! This week Tyrell joins John and tells two awesome but very different success stories that took place last season. Catering more toward private landowners this week, we will be discussing spring food plots.  As farmers are advancing with fertilizing, spraying, and planting crops, every year wildlife managers are eager to pull the trigger and begin spring food plots.  While there is nothing wrong with spring and summer food plots, ask yourself are they truly needed for your property?  Hunting and management goals need to be considered as well as the property itself and the surrounding neighborhood.  If your focus is whitetail deer, are you building a herd or attracting a herd?  What is the lowest hole in the bucket?
