  • Land & Legacy - The Unknown Variables to Growing Bigger Bucks

    17/06/2021 Duración: 36min

We've all read articles and seen videos about the ways to grow bigger antlers. Often times the conversation revolves around feeding programs, mineral stations, genetics, and the age of the animal. Well, all those may play a small role, what about stress? For many years we have been pondering the idea of how to quantitatively evaluate the stress placed on individual deer within a herd, obviously, we are still searching for that answer, but we have many cases studies where lower stress levels in the population and on the landscape have resulted in huge antler increases.  If you want to learn the forgotten or overlooked variables of growing larger deer, think about how widely spaced the resources are across the landscape. Are deer using more energy than they should access what they need? If so, that's unnecessary stress! In this podcast, we break down the dirty details of antler growth. To learn how to make the most of your landscape to shoot larger deer, consider giving this podcast a listen.    Land & Legacy i

  • Land & Legacy - Evaluating Hunting Property with NDA and OnX Maps

    17/06/2021 Duración: 38min

This week we hosted a wonderful event in Northern Missouri with the National Deer Association and OnX Maps. This event we geared to the recreational landowner looking to improve their hunting property. We toured a client's farm who has worked diligently on improving his habitat. This opportunity provided all of the attendees the chance to review some killer habitat projects and learn from someone else's hard work and planning.  The other special opportunity attendees had was the chance to learn, use, and understanding the tool of digital mapping when it came to land management. OnX Maps was used by all attendees to learn how this tool makes land management planning and execution easier. This app is incredible for keeping track of burn units, TSI planning, bedding thicket, invasive species removal, road creation, and much more.  If you are a landowner who is stuck and unsure how to manage your property and reach your goals, give us a call! • DIY Sportsman - Summer Plans and Public Land Challenges

    17/06/2021 Duración: 01h40min

On this episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Garrett talks to Greg Litzinger, who some of you might also know as the Bowhunting Fiend. Although he's located in the northeast, there are definitely many parallels from things that he sees and posts about compared to what Garrett sees in the upper Midwest. The conversation starts with discussions about scouting, summer plans, and tendencies and challenges faced when trying to hunt various terrain types of public land. Greg located a giant buck close to his home with trail cameras and talked about some of the actions he's putting in place now to try and have a chance at him this fall. Some types of public land seem to get pressured more based on the quantity of social media content describing how to hunt them. Greg and Garrett have both noticed lower pressure in areas that seem harder to pick apart. Later in the episode, Greg talks about technology, the challenges of self filming, and even archery.    DIY Sportsman is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your a

  • Southern Ground Hunting - Using Summer Big Buck Intel To Capitalize During The Season with Matt Powell

    17/06/2021 Duración: 01h09min

This week we're talking with our friend from Tennessee and big buck killer, Matt Powell. Matt is a return guest to the show and a favorite among listeners. Likely because he is one of the most consistent bow hunters we've heard. Year in and year out Matt proves that his success in the whitetail woods is more than just luck. Matt takes bowhunting very seriously and uses precision in every decision he makes when hunting big mature bucks. While most hunters are taking a break from their hunting hobby during the summer, Matt is pursuing his hunting passion and locating potential target bucks to chase during the season. Tennessee differs from much of the south in that there is a decent amount of agriculture, mostly soybean fields, that he can glass during this time of year. While that's a great benefit, Matt also talks about ways you can take advantage of the summer in more wooded areas that makes up so much of the south.    Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simple Cast. • Pennsylvania Woodsman - Trout Fishing and Water Quality

    11/06/2021 Duración: 43min

Pennsylvania is home to more than 83,000 miles of streams, many of which hold respectable native trout populations.  In the past decade, many high rain events have devastated creek channels thus affecting food webs and trout populations.  In addition to weather, there are a number of point and non-point pollution sources that continue to impair cold water streams.  This week we interview fisheries biologist, Clayton Good, who has participated in monitoring “unassisted “streams and patterns of native fish in North Central Pennsylvania. Clayton has spent the last 8 years collecting data with state and private organizations like Trout Unlimited.  In that time his passion for the sport of fishing has only grown!  We tap into a bit of his working career as a fisheries biologist, the hurdles that our streams may be facing, and of course, fishing!  Passion drives persistence and he has not struggled to find a way to land trout with his fly rod, whether it be in stocked creeks or the many mountain tributaries that ho

  • Ohio Huntsman - Under Rated Over Rated

    09/06/2021 Duración: 42min

This week on the show we had an old fashion round table discussion of products that we believe are either overrated or the flip side of that and don't get enough attention.  The first overrated product was the 450 bushmaster/45-70 Government. Basically, the argument is these larger straight-walled cartridges are just not that superior to the old fashion 12 gauge shotgun and actually can be harmful as they are often "overkill" and cause an enormous amount of damage to the meat and therefore substantial meat loss.  The next overrated product was 3.5" shells for both turkey and waterfowl.  The argument here is that the added cost along with the added recoil just doesn't give you enough added performance benefit to justify their use.  The last overrated product was the 350 legend.  The argument here was the opposite of the overkill argument and we just are not sure that the round delivers sufficient ballistics downrange in a real world scenario to justify it's use over other similar rounds.  Obviously, we are not
