In the archetypal game of two halves, Forest were flat and insipid in the first period, and paid the price when Zian Flemming gave the Clarets the lead in stoppage time. However Vítor Pereira rallied the troops and made a couple of tactical changes which gave Morgan Gibbs-White the time and space to get a hat-trick, becoming only the third Red to do so in the Premier League era. Overall you would have to say that was a good point against an Aston Villa team who create a lot of problems, and will feel that they should have scored more than one goal, with Watkins and Rogers converting in the rugby sense, rather than netting. Forest were thankful to Neco Williams who had been told to shoot more, and could have had more than one, and also for the return to Premier League action for Chris Wood, who made an immediate impression, not just in chance creation but also improving the shape and effectiveness of the team. On a warm evening on the banks of the Douro, Forest got off to a torrid start, and could have conceded three before Porto took a 10th minute lead. Fortunately the hosts were in a generous mood and gifted an equaliser to the Reds with a comical 40 yard own goal. While the visitors rarely threatened, there was an intriguing moment in the second half when Igor Jesus had a goal disallowed by VAR after colliding with Porto custodian Diogo Costa. Ryan Yates scored a belter early in the second half, before the hosts equalised. The skipper almost capped off an outstanding performance by scoring the winner in the very last minute of extra time, but was denied by the offside flag. Penalties it was, and in an extraordinary turn of events, the Danes MISSED all three of their spot kicks, while MGW, Sangaré and Williams slotted home, to book a place against Porto in the next phase.
