1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace. We predicted that this would be a tough match against an in-form Stoke team, and so it proved. Forest were second best in the first half, but held on, and actually took the lead before the hour mark when sub Sam Surridge played a ball out to the left wing, and Max Lowe's peachy cross was converted by the onrushing Brennan Johnson. The visitors equalised through Josh Maja, and a combination of the woodwork and Brice Samba kept the Reds in it. The last 5-10 minutes were another story though; just as Steve Cooper made his last two attacking substitutions, Samba got himself stupidly and deservedly sent off for cuffing Josh Tymon around the head. Joe Worrall took the gloves and his first duty was to pick the ball out of the net from Lewis Baker's penalty. However, Forest just keep going, and when Jimmy Garner's free kick hit the bar, Scott McKenna got his head to it and Ryan Yates converted from close range to rescue the point.

Another enjoyable away day sees Forest move into the Championship playoff places for the first time this season, continuing the remarkable turnaround Steve Cooper has masterminded since arriving at The City Ground. A first-half goal from James Garner and a penalty from Brennan Johnson in the closing minutes of the match secured a 2-0 success for the Reds, who took the game to Blackburn with a mixture of skill, guile and determination and were rewarded with the points against a side who are well in the mix for an automatic promotion spot. An extended match report on a special day at the City Ground as a first-half salvo saw the Reds blitz Premier League Leicester and progress to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. Goals from Zinckernagel, Johnson, Worrall and Spence gave the home team a comfortable cushion that was only briefly threatened when an error from Brice Samba saw Kelechi Iheanacho pull a goal back just before half-time (the pigeon was awarded MOTM for the away team). Nottingham Forest's transfer window saw new players arrive at the very beginning (Keinan Davis, Steve Cook), middle (Richie Laryea) and end (Sam Surridge and Jonathan Panzo). Just as importantly a number of players left, including Joao Carvalho, Lyle Taylor and Carl Jenkinson, along with more recent acquisitions Rodrigo Ely and Mo Drager. However, the highest profile transfer activity was the retention of Brennan Johnson, with the Reds resisting a big money offer from Brentford, and also Djed Spence for the rest of the season. A bad day for Forest at Cardiff as they failed to turn up, conceding a cheap early goal and never really recovering. Jordan Hugill was given the freedom of the Reds' half after just six minutes and made no mistake, and more lax defending in the second half saw sub Isaak Davies score a second goal after the hour mark. Realistically, the match was over, although a late chance for Xande Silva and a stoppage-time consolation from Keinan Davis offered brief glimmers of hope. Steve Cooper acknowledged that Forest only had themselves to blame and it was possibly the Reds' worst showing since the gaffer took charge. Also worryingly, senior players Steve Cook and Lewis Grabban succumbed to injury, with the skipper taking the brunt of a robust challenge from Will Vaulks and being helped off the pitch in some pain. Forest continued their winning ways by seeing off bottom side Barnsley in front of a bumper Tuesday evening crowd of 27,000 at The City Ground. After a quiet opening, Forest took the lead on 15 minutes when Keinan Davis dispossed Mads Andersen, before striding through and slotting the ball into the corner for his first goal in a Reds shirt since joining on loan from Aston Villa. Steve Cooper's side doubled their lead seven minutes before the break as Ryan Yates finished off a flowing move, which involved an incisive Jack Colback pass to release Brennan Johnson down the left, where he put a superb cross in which Yates tapped home, timing his run into the box perfectly. A slow start to the second half saw little action but Forest stepped it up again and added a third on 75 minutes. This Saturday lunchtime clash saw Forest secure a 2-1 victory over Derby and extend their unbeaten run against their rivals to 10 matches. Forest lined up without the injured Joe Worrall, so Ryan Yates moved into the back three alongside Steve Cook and Scott McKenna, whilst ex-Derby man Max Lowe made his return from the sidelines at left wing-back. However, an uninsipiring start saw Steve Cooper switch to a 4-3-2-1 formation in the first half, but aside from a huge miss by Derby's Tom Lawrence, the opening 45 didn't offer much. The second half got off to a flyer, as Lewis Grabban netted his third goal in as many games and 13th of the season, pouncing after Cook's attempted shot was blocked into his path. We've already had some exciting match reports for you since the turn of the year, but this month's discussion gives us a chance to reflect further on two outstanding results, as the Reds bounced back from Covid and back-to-back league defeats: Tactics: the Arsenal and Millwall victories suggest that Steve Cooper has a blueprint of "keep it solid then strike" - or at least, they do when they have a full squad available. We also discuss how the Reds are able to keep going for 90+ minutes. Transfers: Forest struck early in the window, making two solid-looking signings in Keinan Davis and Steve Cook, with full-back Richmond Laryea following shortly afterwards and Djed Spence seemingly extending his stay at the City Ground. Will there be any outgoings though? This time it was a 91st minute winner from Lewis Grabban that secured a dramatic victory for Steve Cooper's side at The New Den, after a see-saw second half which saw chances galore for Forest, as well as several opportunities for the hosts, who were twice denied brilliantly by Brice Samba in the Forest net. Grabban replaced Philip Zinckernagel in the starting XI, playing just behind Keinan Davis, but it was Forest who struggled to get much going in the first half, only coming into proceedings just before the break. The Reds were much-improved in the second, with some fluent passing from Ryan Yates and James Garner, the guile of Grabban and Davis and the lively Brennan Johnson causing Millwall all kinds of problems. On a night where the Reds delivered a superb team performance, Lewis Grabban netted the deciding goal on 83 minutes when he steered home a terrific cross from the right by Ryan Yates, giving Steve Cooper's Forest a victory that left The City Ground crowd delighted. Another victory for Forest, but a hard-fought one where the Reds had to come from behind and overcome losing two players to injury. It was a murky day by the Trent, and with the spectre of Covid causing disruption to football and our Christmas plans, this was a day when things could have gone awry, especially after Kean Lewis-Potter opened the scoring just before the break. Forest go from strength to strength under Steve Cooper with a brilliant 4-1 win at Swansea City; the Reds putting in a clinical performance against Cooper's former employers and providing the travelling Reds supporters with a day to remember.  The first half was a goalless affair, with Swansea just edging it on chances created. However, the second half saw five goals, four of them for the visitors! Philip Zinckernagel got things going with a ferocious strike from just inside the area on 48 minutes before Lewis Grabban doubled Forest's lead two minutes later after a fine move orchestrated by Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson down the right. Joel Piroe made it 2-1 with a shot that deflected in off Ryan Yates but Johnson restored the two-goal cushion soon after as he pounced on a mistake by Swans goalkeeper Ben Hamer. After three successive Championship draws, Forest got back to winning ways against struggling Peterborough, on a wet and blustery City Ground afternoon. The first half offered very little in terms of quality, although Philip Zinckernagel almost put the Reds ahead within the first minute as his drive from range was tipped away by Posh 'keeper David Cornell, and later Lewis Grabban later fired into the side netting from an angle. The second half was a big improvement; Forest came out pressing Peterborough higher up the pitch, playing with a greater pace and intensity. They were rewarded on 72 minutes as Grabban's miscued finish fell to James Garner in the box to prod home, before Ryan Yates wrapped things up 12 minutes later (even if he didn't know much about it!) as he turned Garner's corner into the net. This game was probably not that high on quality but there were some talking points. West Brom huffed and puffed and occasionally got in behind the Forest backline, but they offered little upfront and Brice Samba only had one notable save to make. Forest were similarly blunt in the final third, with Sam Johnstone palming over Brennan Johnson's deflected effort. However, there is still much to be pleased about - Forest were missing Max Lowe and Jack Colback, but were still competitive throughout, and after Jayson Molumby's red card the away side looked the most likely, with attacking substitutions, efforts blocked, and crosses just missed. There was still a get out of jail moment when Jordan Hugill showed a lack of composure in front of goal, but it says a lot that Steve Cooper's Reds were disappointed with an away draw at an ex-Premier League side. A goalless draw at the City Ground only tells half the story, on a night short on quality but with plenty of incident. Unfortunately, most eyes were on referee Jeremy Simpson, who was trying to make a name for himself by awarding a penalty to Luton, sending off Jack Colback, and then denying the Reds what looked like a clear penalty at the other end. It says a lot when both managers are unhappy with the officials. Both teams could have won it - Brice Samba saved the pen and then made a great save later on, but Lyle Taylor could have given Forest the lead earlier on.
