  • 708 - How Does Thermodynamics Apply To Nutrition? (with CSO Dr. Brandon Roberts)

    03/02/2022 Duración: 17min

Thermodynamics and nutrition have one major thing in common: they both involve energy. Thermodynamics is generally talked about with heat, efficiency, or the transfer of energy Nutrition is always about calories.. And it is often questioned whether a calorie is always a calorie. 1st law of thermodynamics = energy is conserved 2nd law of thermodynamics = energy transfer is not 100% efficient, often some is lost as heat A great example of thermodynamics applied to nutrition is macronutrients. We know that different macronutrients have different thermic effects. For example, protein has a much higher thermogenic effect than fat - about 20% compared to 0%. So not all calories are the same. Next, we have to think about what thermodynamics generally refers to and that’s closed systems.  A closed system always contains the same matter. There can be no mass transfers across the boundary. There may be energy transfer across the boundary. So, is the human body a closed system? Nope. We eat, digest, and pass food/water

  • 704 - Can Supplements Help Reduce Anxiety? (with CSO Dr. Brandon Roberts)

    20/01/2022 Duración: 17min

Anxiety occurs in 10-15% of people and can be chronic or acute. Anxiety disorders are twice as common in women compared to men.    Examples of anxiety: social, general, separation, phobias   Medical treatment: In clinical practice, first-line treatments for anxiety are lifestyle changes, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and then drugs, which sounds a lot like treatments for obesity, right?   Drugs: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) exert their action by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, thereby increasing serotonin activity. The downside of SSRIs are side effects like nausea, headache, drowsiness and a few others.    Alternative: lavender oil a herbal medicinal product   Administration: capsules, massage oils, inhaled oils    Active ingredient: The key active constituents of lavender that are responsible for its calming and sedative effects are linanyl acetate and linalool.    Mechanism: Antagonization of NMDA (N-Methyl-D-aspartate) and GABA-related receptors in the central nervous system

  • 696 - Science Backed Ways To Improve Sleep (Research Review w/ Dr. Brandon Roberts)

    05/01/2022 Duración: 15min

The average person needs 7-8 hours of sleep per night. The easiest way to improve your sleep is to focus on sleep hygiene. Sleep hygiene is a set of behavioral and environmental recommendations intended to promote healthy sleep, and was originally developed for use in the treatment of mild to moderate insomnia, but is now used for all populations who have trouble sleeping. Because sleep hygiene is an inexpensive lifestyle intervention, it serves as a first-line intervention for people who want to improve their sleep but are not likely to qualify for, or seek, more substantial clinical treatment. Reduce Caffeine Intake Blood levels of caffeine peak approximately 30 minutes after oral administration, and the half-life of a single dose of caffeine is 3-7 hours, though this is influenced by individual differences in sensitivity, metabolism, and accumulation. Interestingly, studies have found that large doses of caffeine close to bedtime have an acute disruptive effect on human sleep, but the effects of lower dose

  • 693 - Does Meditation Actually Work? (Science Says…)

    29/12/2021 Duración: 15min

People meditate for different reasons. We’re going to focus on using meditation to reduce psychological stress and stress-related health problems. There are a few types of meditation: Breathing meditation: A practice where you focus your attention on the sensations of breathing. Body scan: A practice where you focus on each individual body part in turn, from head to toe. Loving-kindness meditation: A practice designed to foster positive feelings of love and care, initially toward a close loved one and then extended to yourself, others, and eventually the whole world. Observing-thought meditation: A practice that teaches you to notice as thoughts arise, label them—for instance, as positive or negative, focused on yourself or others—but avoid getting absorbed in them A recent systematic review and meta-analysis sought to determine the efficacy of meditation programs in improving stress-related outcomes (anxiety, depression, stress/distress, positive mood, mental health–related quality of life, attention, substa

  • 690- How To Bounce Back After The Holidays

    22/12/2021 Duración: 20min

The holidays are a busy time for people. From normal stressors such as working long hours to fighting traffic, caring for aging parents and paying the bills, just when you think your life is stressful enough, the holidays arrive, adding an additional layer of stress to our already busy lives. Indeed, people in the United States are more likely to feel their stress increases rather than decreases during the holidays. The holidays can be a hectic time for many, and a lack of money, a lack of time, and the hype and commercialism of the season causes increased stress for people in this country. Holiday humbugs keep working straight through the holiday. They cram work around meals and family time. Don’t be a humbug. Couch potatoes send their last work email before the holidays, they flip the off switch and completely disengage. You need meaningful social interaction, physical activity, and active contemplation, among other things. Workaholidayic takes their workaholic tendencies and simply applies them to a diff
