Chuck also chats with Henny Venus, the Executive Director of the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes about the wonderful partnership they have with Violetta! At the age of five Russian born, Canadian resident Violetta Afanasieva was already figure skating. By the age of eleven she was competing nationally. A year later she retired from amateur figure skating to join the Moscow Circus on Ice with her family. At 14, Afanasieva debuted her hula-hoops act in Russia. She began skating with Holiday on Ice, where she met her future pairs partner and future husband, Pete Dack — a Canadian ice skater. The two have gone on to win the first-ever World Extreme Figure Skating Championship in 2006, and have toured in Canada, Europe, South Africa and South America. Chuck also chats with Colin Henniger, VP of Major Gifts of the SickKids Foundation about the wonderful partnership they have with Amanda! Wisconsin born Amanda Kessel has always been a natural at hockey. Coming from a sports-oriented family, there is no shortage of talent across the Kessel board. Her father was drafted into professional football, and her brothers, Phil and Blake, are also professional hockey players. Kessel played for four years at college level hockey, and helped her team win three national championships. In 2013 she was selected as the winner of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. Kessel has been on Team U.S.A. since 2008 and in the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia, she helped lead her team to a silver-medal win. The Manitoba-born figure skater is a three-time Olympic games medalist and has won multiple other titles with his skating partner Meagan Duhamel. Radford is the only openly gay male to have won an Olympic Games gold medal. He is an advocate for the Canadian Olympic Committee's #OneTeam initiative, which supports LGBTQ inclusion and promotion in the sport. Inspired by skaters such as Kurt Browning in the early 1990's, Radford began skating at the age of eight. He moved away from home at the age of 14 to pursue his figure skating career, and hasn't looked back since. American skater Amanda Evora and retired NHLer Scott Thornton have triumphed, winning the fourth season of CBC-TV's Battle of the Blades. Evora and Thornton were declared champions of the televised skating competition Sunday night in Toronto, after earning the most public votes ahead of the season finale. Evora is a two-time U.S. pairs silver medallist, while Thornton had a nearly two-decade long career in the NHL, playing in Toronto, Edmonton, Montreal, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Jose. As part of their win, Evora and Thornton chose the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to receive a $100,000 donation. The pair beat out stiff competition from fellow finalists Violetta Afanasieva and Jason Strudwick and Marie-France Dubreuil and Mathieu Dandenault.
