    07/07/2022 Duración: 47min

We’re a little all over the place in this episode, from Kate Bush and Stranger Things to Top Gun: Maverick, to the importance of the creative journey and how sharing the what and the how often yields greater fruit than simply playing our processes close to the vest.LINKSHenry Thomas’ ET Audition - YouTubeAlexander ShaiaMaria LaxMaria Lax on Process DrivenCONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photography  Twitter: @seantuck  Instagram: @seantuck  YouTube: Sean TuckerCONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com  Twitter: @jefferysaddoris  Instagram: @jefferysaddorisYou can also connect with both of us by sending an email to deepnatter@gmail.com.SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed.SUPPORTLeave a review or a rating wherever you listen, or you can DONATE to support the shows more directly.MUSICHigh Line by DuffmusiqMusic featured in this episode is licensed from Artlist, which is a terrific music licensing platfor

  • Iteration 69: Productive Disruption

    02/07/2022 Duración: 04min

For the past several months, I found myself feeling more and more overwhelmed by my own expectations around the work I was producing. I started feeling the weight of some of the narratives in the work—greed, power, corruption, the failure of capitalism—a realization prompted in part by a conversation with my stepmother who, when looking at a recent painting of mine simply responded, “Wow. That’s really dark, honey.” Being so close to the work hadn’t really allowed me to see it for what it was becoming, but taking a step back pulled it into very sharp focus. The subject matter, as well as the supporting research required to make it, was really starting to get to me.LINKSStation Eleven on HBO MaxStation Eleven by Emily St. John MandelCONNECT WITH MEWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com  Twitter: @jefferysaddoris  Instagram: @jefferysaddorisSUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed.SUPPORTLeave a review or a rating wherever you listen,

  • Deep Natter 53: A Smooth Trajectory to Brilliant

    30/06/2022 Duración: 49min

Do you ever get the feeling that the world is falling apart? Me too, but in this episode, Sean and I discuss how feelings aren’t facts and just because the bad stuff is often easier to believe doesn’t make it true. Plus, we talk about expectations and how needing to know the outcome of a project often keeps us from ever beginning.LINKSRichard Rohr — Growing Up Men | The On Being ProjectSapiens by Yuval HarariCONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photography  Twitter: @seantuckInstagram: @seantuckYouTube: Sean TuckerCONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com  Twitter: @jefferysaddoris  Instagram: @jefferysaddorisYou can also connect with both of us by sending an email to deepnatter@gmail.com.SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed.SUPPORTLeave a review or a rating wherever you listen, or you can DONATE to support the shows more directly.MUSICHigh Line by DuffmusiqMusic featured in this episode is licensed from A

In this episode, Sean is back and shares some of his thoughts and takeaways from his recent creative retreat in Tuscany. Also, I finally finished The Last of Us 2, which we’ve wanted to talk about literally for years. I think it’s safe to say that for each of us, not only was it an incredible gaming experience, but also an example of how great storytelling and well-paced narrative can transcend mediums.LINKSThe Meaning in the MakingCONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photography  Twitter: @seantuck  Instagram: @seantuck  YouTube: Sean TuckerCONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com  Twitter: @jefferysaddoris  Instagram: @jefferysaddorisYou can also connect with both of us by sending an email to deepnatter@gmail.com.SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed.SUPPORTLeave a review or a rating wherever you listen, or you can DONATE to support the shows more directly.MUSICHigh Line by DuffmusiqMusic featured in thi

  • Deep Natter 51: Everything’s an Experiment

    16/06/2022 Duración: 46min

Last week, I was joined by Maarten Rots for a terrific conversation around his approach to creativity. As is often the case when talking about the creative process, there’s always more to unpack so I asked Maarten if he’d be willing to come back to continue the conversation. In this episode, while in some ways we’re picking up where we left off, we also go in some different directions, specifically around giving ourselves permission to play and being okay when a project goes somewhere we never intended.LINKSDo the Work! by Steven PressfieldCONNECT WITH MAARTENWebsite: https://www.maartenrots.nlMarch & Rock magazine: https://marchandrock.comInstagram: @maartenrotsCONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com  Twitter: @jefferysaddoris  Instagram: @jefferysaddorisYou can also connect with both of us by sending an email to deepnatter@gmail.com.SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed.SUPPORTLeave a review or a rating wh

    10/06/2022 Duración: 49min

This is episode 50 of Deep Natter and today we’ve got a little treat for you. If you’re a regular listener, you’ve undoubtedly heard the name Maarten Rots. He’s someone that Sean and I have mentioned a number of times on the show, usually in reference to how creative he is. Back in 2020, Sean even did a video about him  He’s an artist in every sense of the word and in this episode, Maarten and I are talking about his approach to creativity which really centers around self-care and wellness. It’s a terrific conversation that I’m sure you’re going to enjoy.LINKSDoes Every Photograph have to Tell a Story? (feat. • Iteration 68: Putting My Self First

    09/06/2022 Duración: 05min

One of the most difficult things about being a freelance creative is that you’re basically always on the clock. Sure, you can wait for inspiration to strike, but in my experience, you’ll end up waiting more than making. As Chuck Close famously said, “Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work.” While I understand what he’s saying, and may even agree with it to an extent, sometimes it’s not that easy. I think there’s a middle ground where instead of simply waiting for inspiration to strike, we can think about the purpose and intention we want to bring to our work before embarking on the uncertain journey of making it.LINKSMaarten RotsThe Practice by Seth GodinCreativity, Inc. by Ed CatmullCONNECT WITH MEWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com  Twitter: @jefferysaddoris  Instagram: @jefferysaddorisSUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed.SUPPORTLeave a review or a rating wherever you listen, or you can DONA

  • Deep Natter 49: Structured But Simple

    02/06/2022 Duración: 45min

Last week, I was talking to Maarten Rots—who you’ve heard us mention several times on the show—and I was asking him how he manages to stay so creative. His answer not only surprised me, but it inspired me to adopt a similar approach to my own creativity in an experiment for the month of June. Talking it through with Sean launched us into a terrific discussion around making and self-care and, what he calls, “turning down the bullying boss.”LINKSThe Meaning in the MakingCarl JungCONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photographyTwitter: @seantuck  Instagram: @seantuck  YouTube: Sean TuckerCONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com  Twitter: @jefferysaddoris  Instagram: @jefferysaddorisYou can also connect with both of us by sending an email to deepnatter@gmail.com.SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed.SUPPORTLeave a review or a rating wherever you listen, or you can DONATE to support the shows more directly.MUSI

  • Deep Natter 48: Feelings Aren’t Facts

    27/05/2022 Duración: 43min

A few days ago, I came across a post that painted a pretty grim portrait of our collective futures—and here’s the thing…I wasn’t surprised by it at all. If I’m being honest, it’s something that I often feel anyway. When I brought it up to Sean, he was quick to point out that the way we feel is often just that, a feeling, not a fact. In this especially deep natter, we unpack happiness, negativity bias, and why for many of us, the bad stuff is often easier to believe.LINKSIs Happiness a Choice?Vice article: We’re DoomedSteven Pinker: Enlightenment NowViktor Frankl: Man’s Search for MeaningNegativity biasRick Hanson (velcro/teflon)Confirmation biasCONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photography  Twitter: @seantuck  Instagram: @seantuck  YouTube: Sean TuckerCONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com  Twitter: @jefferysaddoris  Instagram: @jefferysaddorisYou can also connect with both of us by sending an email to deepnatter@gmail.com.SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your

  • Iteration 67: Is Happiness a Choice?

    25/05/2022 Duración: 07min

I was texting with one of my oldest friends recently after she got back from a trip to Italy and at one point in the conversation, she asked whether I was happy. “I’m grateful, but I don’t think I’m happy,” I responded. “And maybe that’s just the way I’m wired. I’m not generally unhappy either, although there are moments of each. It’s just not consistent.” There were a few moments of onscreen silence and she came back with, “Maybe don’t ask yourself if you’re happy (and neither will I—sorry!) and just be. I few nights ago, I got to go see Jacob Collier, who I was introduced to by Sean. If you’ve never heard of him or heard his music, he’s an absolute genius who is able to play pop, jazz, classical, you name it, and his fans include Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, and Hans Zimmer. In this episode, we’re talking about not just Jacob and his music, but some of the things we can take from him and apply to our own art making. Terms like “icon” and “legend” get thrown around pretty casually these days, but in the case of photographer Joe McNally, they are not only absolutely appropriate but also well-deserved. He’s shot for some of the most prestigious magazines and clients in the world, including TIME, Newsweek, LIFE, Sports Illustrated, New York, and National Geographic. His work has earned him dozens of awards, including the first Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Journalistic Impact. He’s a best-selling author and has recently released his newest book The Real Deal: Field Notes From the Life of a Working Photographer.  He’s also humble, funny, and tells terrific stories and I am so grateful to have had the chance to sit down with him for a bit.
