Believers are invincible overcomers—not in themselves or by their own power, but in Jesus Christ and by His power. Although their ultimate victory is assured, Christians still lose some of the battles. They succumb to Satan's temptations, the world's allurements, and the corruption of their own hearts, and fall into sin. But if believers are not always victorious in the skirmishes of this life, how can they be sure that they are truly overcomers? John gives three characteristics of an overcomer in verses 1-5:

Christians need to be suspicious of spiritual "fool's gold. "They must not accept something as true without first testing it to see if it meets with God's approval. If it fails the test, Christians should discard it as false and warn others also. But if it passes the test, in keeping with the truth of God's Word, believers can embrace and endorse it wholeheartedly. In this message we find John giving us "tests" we can employ to guide us.

The world encourages us to doubt anything to do with God. The father of lies works overtime to try to raise doubts in us. How can you be so stupid as to believe in this Christianity stuff? And the amazing thing is that even if it doesn’t cause enough doubts for us to walk away from the faith it can be used to diminish and even compromise our faith. We doubt enough that we lose any boldness and any confidence in our faith and so we go through life afraid to tell anyone about how amazing knowing Jesus and experiencing His life really is. How can we find assurance? This sermon looks to answer those doubts.
