  • How strength training can benefit your running

    01/07/2015 Duración: 03min

Into another edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, I’m Brad Brown, Lindsey Parry joins us once again. Lindsey, we’ve got another two questions today; it’s got to do with strength training. The first question comes in from Sihle Matetwa, Gillian Innis also submitted a question. Sihle said strength training exercises to build-up legs as well as core exercises. Gillian says, 2016 will be her second attempt at Comrades Down run, she missed the cut off by 25 minutes last time out. What training can she do to strengthen her quads as her thighs were so sore and she did start in H seeding batch? She will start in the charity seeding batch next year, but all about strength training. What’s the best thing to do to focus on the Comrades Down run? • How to breath to maximise oxygen intake

    29/06/2015 Duración: 05min

On this edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, I’m Brad Brown, Lindsey Parry with us once again. Lindsey, its another double headed question today. The first one comes from Olivia Wallace-Smith; Olivia wanted to know about breathing techniques. Then Vusi Rajuli said good day thanks for the podcast; I would like to know what is the best method of breathing while running and what’s the relationship between my running and breathing. Finally what exactly is VO2 max, and how does it relate to my performance. I’m not scientist, but I would say breathing is important? Read More · Training Programs · www.CoachParry.com

  • How to get the best out of a treadmill session

    26/06/2015 Duración: 03min

Another edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, I’m Brad Brown, great to be with you. Lindsey Parry joins us too, great question in from Nisha Padayachee. Nisha is saying she’s a mom, she’s also a novice runner and together with safety concerns, she has limited time to run outdoors. She’s restricted her week day training to ‘dreadmill’ runs, as she calls them and her weekend long distance road running. She wants to know, can you advice on a training plan that sadly would include the bulk of the training on a treadmill? Read More · Training Programs · www.CoachParry.com

  • Don't get sick during your next Comrades

    24/06/2015 Duración: 05min

Into the next edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, it’s another double header today. Lindsey Parry joins us, I’m Brad Brown. Lindsey, had a question in regarding nutrition during Comrades, actually a couple of them. Collette Brighton wanted to know; why do so many runners end up vomiting on race day? Then also had a question in, also along the nutrition lines, from Charl du Plessis saying how much and what should you eat immediately before and during the race. He says he thinks he bombed out and he puts in brackets ‘I think’ because he didn’t eat properly before. He ate almost nothing during the race and it was probably combined with a bad day. I think those two questions are quite linked, what’s the story with nutrition and why do people get sick at Comrades on race day? Read more · www.CoachParry.com

  • What's the real deal with compression socks?

    22/06/2015 Duración: 04min

Into yet another edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, I’m Brad Brown, Lindsey Parry with us once again. Question in today from Val Opperman. Val is asking about gear and specifically about compression socks. We’ve spoken about it before here on the podcast, but the jury, I think, is still out. A lot of people swear by them, a lot of people think they’re snake oil and they’re absolutely rubbish. What’s the deal, compression socks or not and what’s the latest scientific evidence relating to the benefits of using them? Read More · Training Programs · www.CoachParry.com

  • The art to faster marathon running

    19/06/2015 Duración: 03min

Welcome to the next edition of Ask Coach Parry podcast.I’m Brad Brown, with me, coach, Lindsey Parry. Lindsey, today’s question I think is a fantastic one. It comes from Irene Gonzales and Irene was asking about running a PB. She ran Comrades this year, she missed out on a Bill Rowan by literally a few seconds. She wanted to know, is there an optimal time to running a marathon PB before Comrades. When is the best time to do it? Training Programs · Read More · www.CoachParry.com

  • How to do a sensible slow build-up to Comrades

    17/06/2015 Duración: 02min

In this edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, I’m Brad Brown, Lindsey Parry with us. Lindsey, there were so many people inspired by Comrades 2015. If I just look at the numbers of our websites and the number of beginners training programs that were downloaded, literally in the first few days after Comrades. It’s incredible how the race has just captured people’s minds once again and I think Caroline Wostmann had a lot to do with that. Got a question in from Michelle. Michelle says she’s never run Comrades before, but she is in for 2016, she belongs to Hillcrest Village’s athletics club and was wondering if you could give us some advice on when she should start her training. She’s run four half marathons already and her average time is around 2:10. Any advice would be much appreciated. So this is someone who has got a slight base, she’s running halves, which is pretty good and she wants to have a bit of an onslaught onto Comrades 2016, how should she go about that? Lindsey, it’s just after Comrades 2015 and a lot of people have obviously achieved their goals, but many people have also failed in attempts. Whether it be at a specific time, if they were going for a Bill Rowan or for a bronze medal and even sometimes missing a cut off. But a lot of people are itching to get back onto the roads, let’s talk about recovery after Comrades. It’s a big effort, it takes a lot out of you, when should you seriously think about starting to run again. It’s from Camo and it starts out in good form. It says, g’day guys, just wondering when your official programs are going to be going up for 2016. He said, are you going to be compiling new ones, he’s after a program for a Bill Rowan medal in 2016. Camo says, loves the podcasts. When are those programs going up Lindsey? • South African women light up 2015 Comrades

    08/06/2015 Duración: 08min

Welcome back to the Ask Coach Parry podcast, it’s been a week since the 2015 Comrades Marathon and we decided we were taking a week off and I think it was well deserved, particularly for coach Lindsey Parry. It’s been an awesome week, it’s been extremely busy. It’s amazing how hungry the South African public were for a home win. I know the men have brought us a few home wins the last couple of years, but the ladies haven’t brought one for 17 years. That home win and not just a home win, but a one and two has got so much interest. Read More · Training Programs · www.CoachParry.com

  • Painkillers & Comrades - a potentially lethal combination

    26/05/2015 Duración: 07min

Brad Brown: Welcome to this edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, we spoke yesterday about making the call, if you’re ill or not, with regards to running Comrades. If you wake up on race day sick and what you should and shouldn’t do. Something else that happens fairly often at the Comrades Marathon is the use of painkillers and anti-inflammatories on the road. I wanted to touch on that today. Lindsey Parry, you’ve got quite strong opinions on the use of painkillers and anti-inflammatories. Tell us a little bit why you think the way you do about it, what are the dangers of taking painkillers and should you do it. Read More · Training Programs · www.CoachParry.com

  • To race or not to race - that is the question

    25/05/2015 Duración: 04min

Welcome to the next edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, with us Comrades coach, Lindsey Parry, I’m Brad Brown. Lindsey, the last podcast we spoke about illness in the build up to Comrades. But it’s one of those things that particularly this time of the year is very prevalent and there have been a few incidents. Particularly last year there was one with someone passing away on race day. It is something we need to be well aware of, that if we are coming down with something and as we get closer to Comrades day and particularly on Comrades race day. I was one of the few who woke up on Comrades morning last year sick as a dog and I decided I wasn’t running. It’s a big call to make but it’s an important one. Let’s talk about making that call if you do feel yourself getting sick in the build up to, in the final week of Comrades. What can you do to limit the effects and when should you make the call; yes, I’m going to run or no, I’m not going to. What’s the thought process behind that and it’s a big call to make

  • 2 weeks out sick - can I still do Comrades?

    22/05/2015 Duración: 03min

Welcome to this edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, I’m Brad Brown, Lindsey Parry with us once again. Lindsey, the time is getting nigh, as they say and we’ve got two very similar questions in. They came in a few days ago, but I think they’re still quite relevant. One was from Zelda, the other one was from Orkie and they’ve both been struggling with a bit of illness. Zelda is saying she got flu and she managed to finish her antibiotics last week Friday. She ran 30km on Sunday, felt good, woke up on Monday and was sick again. She should not have run on Sunday, that’s what she’s saying to herself. She’ll rest this week, no long run on the weekend, will she be fine for Comrades if the last training she did was two weeks before race day? Read More · Training Programs · www.CoachParry.com

  • 70.3 in March and Comrades - no problem

    21/05/2015 Duración: 03min

On this edition of the Ask Coach Parry podcast, I’m Brad Brown and today’s question comes through from Craig and it’s a Comrades combined with IronMan question for Lindsey. Craig wanted to know; he’s doing a lot of IronMan training and needs to keep that up. He’s entered a half in March 2016, I love this, he’s planning ahead. He wants to know, is doing a half IronMan in March 2016 too close to Comrades? Plus can he incorporate his swimming, riding and running into the Comrades training program, what would you suggest? Finally when would you seriously start training for Comrades in the build up to 2016, and he’s asking where can he get a program from for first timers. He has done the Two Oceans, so he’s no novice to running, but he’s thinking of making the step up to Comrades next year. Read More · Training Programs · www.CoachParry.com
