  • Ep.514: North Face Climber and Alpine Start Coffee Founder - Matt Segal

    03/05/2019 Duración: 46min

Growing up, Matt was an unlikely candidate to become a professional climber.  Mostly because the southern beaches of Florida were his home. However, early on he showed promising climbing ability and began competing all over the country and world. After moving out to Colorado he began doing things very few climbers were doing, garnering the attention of The North Face. He signed with them and did climbs and expeditions all over the world. Noticing the lack of quality coffee on the market for backcountry sports, Matt’s mind began working. When back home in Colorado he would experiment with instant coffee combinations until he was satisfied. • Ep. 512: Creating Your Own Thru-Hiking Route - Erik Schlimmer

    29/04/2019 Duración: 57min

Erik is an experienced peak-bagger, long-distance hiker, author (of seven books), and has immense amounts of knowledge about off-trail travel and wilderness adventuring, especially in the northeast of America. He has climbed over 200 remote peaks in the Adirondacks during winter, with many of them not having a trail to the summit. He’s an expert in toponym research (why things are named what they are) and sustainable trail design. All this knowledge and skill has led him to achieve what many outdoor enthusiasts can only dream, create his own thru-hiking route; the Trans Adirondack, a 235-mile backpacking route in the Adirondack mountains that includes off-trail navigation and bushwacking. It’s broken down like this, 182 miles of trails (76%), 50 miles of roads (21%), and 8 miles of trackless woods (3%) to get from one end of the Adirondack Park to the other. His knowledge is vast, his demeanor unassuming, and his attitude superb. I hope you’re as inspired as I am after this conversation with a truly humble le

  • Ep. 511: The Sharp End of Life and Raising Alex Honnold - Dierdre Wolownick-Honnold

    26/04/2019 Duración: 01h01min

Long before her son was doing some of the most incredible climbing in the world and her daughter was solo bike touring around the west, Dierdre was living a life full of adventure. From moving to different countries and starting orchestras from scratch to raising two kids by herself and working much more than fulltime, Dierdre enjoyed taking on out-of-the-box challenges and seeing what she’s made of. Never to be one to think of age as a limitation, Dierdre started running at the age of 55 and became climbing at 58.  Within a few years, she was running marathons and by 66 she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the same rock that her son, Alex, would free solo. It’s evident in both her children that they were raised by someone with lots of room to live outside the box. He has competed in some of the longest, toughest ultramarathons, like the Likeys 6633 Ultra 350 and the Yukon Arctic Ultra 300.
