  • Ep. 532: Breaking Free from Spreadsheets to Handcraft Wooden Paddle Boards - Tony Smith

    14/06/2019 Duración: 55min

It’s not easy leaving something secure to go after something so uncertain. However, that’s one of the necessary ingredients to have a true adventure. Tony Smith knew that when there was sawdust left in his hair during a work meeting after working on his passion for crafting over a lunch break, it was time to take a leap. He left a stable career to jump full-time into handcrafted wooden paddle boards but gave himself the deadline to try it for a year.  With a young family and no real certainty it would work out, the journey of building Jarvis Boards was truly an adventure of a lifetime. Today, 5 years into the adventure, Jarvis Boards is still going strong and getting more and more publicity. Today, we talk to Tony to get a feel for what it was really like to make the leap, the reality of risk when doing what you love for a living, and the highs and lows of growing upon a new and solid foundation. 13/06/2019 Duración: 01h06min

Five years ago Luisa and Graeme Bell, along with their kids, Keelan and Jessica, set out to explore the African continent via Overland vehicle. After that epic journey, it only took a few days of being home in South Africa to realize that they needed to continue their adventure. So they put their existing lives aside, purchased a 2009 Land Rover Defender 130, and outfitted it for full-time living. Then the roaming began. Their travels have taken them around the African continent nearly twice, up through South and Central America, and winding them through the United States, Canada, and Alaska. We've caught up with them while they are house sitting in Baja Mexico. Listen in to hear how they do it and what experiences they've had so far! 10/06/2019 Duración: 53min

Need something wild to do in the winter? You can hike (and skateboard some of) the entire 1,300 miles of endless pine forests, sandy beaches, and gator-infested swamps of the Florida Trail. An adventure that doesn't see very many participants compared to some of the other big trails in the US.  Today we talk to Alex Fogt who took it on last winter and says it's up there with anything else he's ever done! • Ep. 529: How Argon Inflated Jackets Led to the Best Sleeping Pad in the Outdoors - Cory Tholl

    07/06/2019 Duración: 48min

A true adventure usually includes a few changes in the original plan. Some good and some bad. The same goes for the adventure of starting a business or introducing a product in the outdoor industry. When a crazy idea of having argon inflated jackets to keep warm was born, Cory Tholl was totally intrigued by the idea. So much so, he joined the small team and they got to work bringing the outdoor world one of the strangest twists on the tried and true jacket. The name of the whole venture became Klymit, and as they pursued this adventure of an idea it became clear that something needed to change. Using the technology they'd already built, they decided to turn their attention to other inflatable products to make life outdoors a lot easier.  Today, Klymit makes a number of outdoor products but are especially known for their affordable, lightweight, and comfortable sleeping pads. If you have an idea you want to start pursuing, I hope Cory's story helps you learn a thing or two about being flexible in the w

  • Ep. 524: Vol-Bivouac Paragliding 1,200-Km of the Canadian Rockies - Benjamin Jordan

    27/05/2019 Duración: 01h16min

Last summer, Benjamin Jordan realized his lifelong dream of flying his paraglider along the entire length of Canada's southern Rocky Mountains. From Roosville, Montana to Prince George, BC, the 37-year old, Nelson-based filmmaker flew his wind-powered aircraft across some of BC's and Alberta's most rugged wilderness while having to make strategic landings atop mountains to avoid electrical storms or touching down within the forbidden boundaries of Banff National Park. Despite the many challenges he encountered along the way, none compared to the psychological struggle of sitting alone in the alpine for weeks at a time, waiting for poor weather or wildfire smoke to clear so that he could fly on. Able to carry no more than 12-days of food, Jordan would occasionally land in populated areas to refuel before heading back up into the nearest summit to re-launch. Of the entire expedition, Jordan was most nervous, and excited, about soaring over the glaciers and alpine lakes of Jasper National Park, North

Many of us are training for something, but most of us are probably not optimizing that time and energy. Should I do more cardio? Should I build more muscle? Should I work more on flexibility? How do I avoid injury? How do I train for a 6-month hike when I work 70 hours a week? These are all questions that Rowan Smith of Summit Strength hears every day. • Ep. 520: The C.A.R.E. Method of Dealing with Injury and Change - Bart Laemmel

    17/05/2019 Duración: 01h19min

Our lives as adventurers take totally unforeseen turns. It's the nature of the adventures themselves to do so. Sometimes, those turns can lead to a place where we can no longer continue our adventures or pursuing our sports. What are we to do?  Bart has faced this dilemma head on and in my opinion, he's faced it with a ton of grace and positivity. So much so that he now helps others overcome the obstacle of "who am I?" when their bodies, minds, finances, relationships, etc. no longer allow them to do what they love to do.  You may not be facing any adventure-threatening obstacles at the moment, but Bart's C.A.R.E. method is applicable to just about any life struggle, adventure related or not.  **ANNOUNCEMENT** ADVENTURE GRANT APPLICATION OPEN  Go to athleticbrewing.com/adventure-grant-application to apply for our first ever $1,000 adventure grant, funded by Athletic Brewing Company!  Follow the link for all the rules and instructions for how to apply! After over 20 years as a technical rock climber and a terrible back injury, Tom Jones accidentally discovered the strange and intriguing sport of canyoneering. What is it like to rappel down into a deep sandstone slot and to wander where few have ever gone before? The magical lighting, otherworldly formations, and total lack of access to the outside world, canyoneering is a sport few ever experience and even fewer get to know it as well as Tom.  canyoneeringusa.com Tom's book:Zion: Canyoneering by Tom Jones Photo Credit here. • Ep. 518: Ways to Pay for Your Adventure - Mason Gravley

    13/05/2019 Duración: 39min

Whenever I was starting to plan my first big adventures, one of my biggest questions was, how do people pay for these experiences? What I've learned is that there's no real secret out there. It's a lot of grinding, budgeting, side gigs, sacrifice, asking, etc. The process of funding your adventure is honestly an entirely separate and equally difficult adventure. For me, the preparation and planning was half the excitement and joy of adventures, and often was a much longer experience than the trip itself.   This won't be a super organized or hugely insightful episode, just more of my thoughts and experiences on the subject.  I hope you enjoy and I hope you share your adventure-funding tips and tricks with us!
