If you're not familiar with lean manufacturing, it's an idea that allows production to  be as efficient as possible while minimizing waste in time and material.  So why the hell am I talking about this on a hunting podcast? I feel that there are certain principles that lean manufacturing uses to help correct process errors  that we might be able to use in the woods when we encounter failure. Today we have a really cool episode where we are talking solo, DIY public land elk hunting with Brandon Mcdonald. Brandon embarked on his first archery elk hunt in 2019 and we cover everything from preparation, gear, the highlights, and the struggles. We also talk about what he learned from his experiences and what he changing up for 2020 in order to tip the odds in his favor.  It takes grit and a whole lot of mental toughness to keep grinding even when every voice inside your head is telling you to back out, pack up camp and get the hell out of there. Hunting in the South is a difficult task as it is, especially when you're targeting mature bucks. Add that already challenging scenario to the chance that your hunting grounds could be completely under water in a moments notice, well, that sounds like a nightmare! With the end of Missouri turkey season getting further and further away, we wanted to get a fun filled turkey episode in before the summer sets in.  In today's episode, the guys talk with Scott Wilper, owner of Wilper Custom Calls. I did something that wasn't sure I'd ever do... apply for an Iowa tag. Specifically, I applied for a 1st shotgun season tag, which is relatively easier to draw and doesn't interfere with other archery rut hunts like South Dakota or Missouri. In fact, it doesn't really interfere with any of my other planned firearms hunts either. But this does bring up a topic that's obviously very fresh in my mind, which is scouting and preparing for gun hunts. It can be very different than an archery hunt, unless it's a gun hunt during the rut and in a low pressure area.  In this podcast I talk about the three primary factors I look at in relation to a gun hunt: Timing, Pressure, and Terrain. Timing and pressure both dictate to a fairly large extent the overall strategy, but terrain dictates the exact set up. I dive into three specific terrain types that I have the most historical experience with: Hills, Marsh/Swamp, and Big Woods terrain, and how I tackle each a little differently when it comes to exact setup.    DIY Sports
