Ohio Huntsman - Do Fawns Really Taste Better?
09/12/2020 Duración: 51minThis week on the show we tackle the age old question "Does a rutting buck cause the meat to taste bad?". We each go through our theories on why this is believed by many in the whitetail world and what we think contributes to "off" flavors and how to try and prevent or minimize them in your harvest. We also touch on the differences in taste between does vs. bucks and young deer vs old deer. Let us know what you think. Do different deer taste different and if so, what causes it? Land & Legacy - Pennsylvania Deer Management and Habitat Management
08/12/2020 Duración: 56minWhen it comes to the hunting heritage in the state of Pennsylvania the roots run deep. Hunters flock to the woods during the firearms season in numbers that few states can compete with. The sheer amount of hunters headed to the woods creates a landscape where deer are conditioned to hunters and pressure. Nocturnal deer movement and the chance for older age class bucks are a struggle for many who wish for better hunting. Land & Legacy client Will Russell has worked hard on his property since our visit in 2019. From timber thinning, young forest openings (Bedding Thickets), edge feathering, and old field management are at the top of his list to improve the farm. By utilizing a logging operation he was able to complete much of his timber work in less than two years and the wildlife are already showing drastic improvements. With all this work being done it's provided a great opportunity for his family to enjoy. With his six year old son joining him in the stand and his dad making his first archery harve

Land & Legacy - Knock The Dust Off the Chainsaws
08/12/2020 Duración: 01h01minWelcome back to another Land & Legacy podcast! We are getting back into the swing of things with the habitat talks. The majority of rut hunting is over and the questions are rolling in regarding habitat improvement projects. So we take time this week to cover some viewer questions and build upon last week's podcast when we discussed the difference between bedding thickets and sanctuaries. Security cover on a farm is a non-negotiable necessity. However, security or the lack of intrusion is NOT often limited in most neighborhoods. There are always tucked away places on farms in your neck of the woods that will experience very little human intrusion. However, what is lacking is the presence of quality cover that is secure. Deeming an area as a sanctuary doesn't set you apart from neighboring farms. Quality cover that is secure gets you way ahead! Holding deer during daylight hours is the name of the game. This is how you win at controlling the local deer herd. It is time to start getting the chainsa

Southern Ground Hunting - Mature Bucks In Steep Country | How To Key In On Terrain Features In Monotonous Big Woods with Jason Newton
07/12/2020 Duración: 01h13minWe've got a great episode for you this week. We're talking with Jason Newton of North Georgia. We get into the nitty gritty of his hunting style, searching for mature bucks in the steep mountain country. Jason has killed some big bucks in his lifetime, mostly in the big woods/mountain country of Georgia. Today we're breaking down how he keys in on certain features in these steep hills and hollers, that tend to produce the most big bucks. We talk about wind, thermals, thick cover, but most importantly... terrain. If you're from the eastern portion of the south, you've more than likely dealt with some of the same type of territory as Jason. Big woods, monotonous, bluffs... just difficult to navigate land. As Jason points out in the episode, there are certain things that you can find in these places that can produce great mature bucks if you put in the time and effort. Jason also talks about the importance of being mobile in his hunting strategy, all the way down to the type of vehicle that h

Huntavore - The Good, The Bad, and the 3pt Buck
07/12/2020 Duración: 51minNick elaborates on his archery season and upto the dreaded “deer season shutdown” for thanksgiving. Nick made the big purchase of a saddle and sticks this year. Choosing to be more mobile and adaptable. The Saddle is a Tethrd Phantom, with some borrowed Marine dump pouches, used to hold ammo for the SAW. The sticks are full length Hawk Helium Sticks, with the stock straps and buckles. To help with gaining elevation, Nick devised a DIY cinch-strap aider system. With a loop over the boot and the hook roughly knee height, held together by elastic cordage, this little mod allows 5’8” Nick to stand at 15’-18’ with little effort. Really stretching, can get to 20’+. This new system became very valuable as Archery season 2020 presented new challenges of altered food sources, corn cover gone, and a dried up waterhole. Deer movement had changed and Nick had to adapt. New stand sites, moving each hunt, and utilizing new, unused access routes made it possible for Nick to be successful on the last day of Archery s

Southern Ground Hunting - Finding Pockets Of Deer | Drew's "Tale of Two Bucks"
03/12/2020 Duración: 01h03minThere's an old phrase that hunters often use, "don't leave deer to find deer". That phrase holds true in today's podcast. Drew recaps his last two weeks of hunting, telling the stories of two different bucks he's killed since the last time we talked. We break down his hunt by talking about what led him to hunt that area. Not rubs, not scrapes, but good old fashioned deer tracks. The guys discuss the important of finding tracks and why it's an incredibly productive sign to look for. Drew tells us about this area where he had found a ton of tracks, and after hunting it several times the deer sightings did not seem to slow down. We've talked to several guests who consistently kill deer out of the same tree, which might go against the "first sit, best sit" theory. In this case, Drew continued to hunt this same spot and eventually it paid off. While the majority of this property has a pretty low deer density, this spot seemed to be a pocket. We've learned that once you

Land & Legacy - Difference between Bedding Areas and Sanctuaries?
01/12/2020 Duración: 54minTime to set the record straight on terminology. Some of the most common phrases in the world of wildlife often get used incorrectly and then rarely implemented appropriately. The term bedding thicket and sanctuary are NOT interchangeable. Sanctuaries are often large vast areas that receive little to no human intrusion. The lack of human intrusion then begins the assumption that the area is secure and holding deer. A secure area doesn't necessarily hold deer, but an area that offer secure cover does! That is the main difference between a sanctuary and a bedding thicket. The presence of actual deer cover is critical to see wildlife actually respond to it positively. You will certainly want to join us on this podcast as we break down the important differences between these key terms in property layout. Enjoy. Learn. Land & Legacy - Hunting the Rut Success in Bedding Areas
01/12/2020 Duración: 45minLand management can take years to show improvement right? Wrong! Land & Legacy client Louie Zinn had a season to remember this fall. Adam worked with Louie in January of 2020 on his farm in western Illinois and they addressed the main habitat issues he was facing. Like many people in the midwest he was missing some key features to bring his property to the next level. Quality cover is something that is greatly overlooked and isn't hard to create. With Eastern Red Cedar encroachment occurring throughout the farm this was louie's first project. By adding diversity and cutting the cedar trees Louie found immediate results and the deer were taking advantage of it! By utilizing a chainsaw and cutting cedars and thinning outer undesirable species with a mix of hinge cuts and flush cuts woody browse and cover were quickly added to the farm. Through habitat restoration and property architecture Louie and his friend were able to tag two giant bucks on his farm less than a year after running the chainsaw!

Land & Legacy - Two Cruising Bucks Hit the Dirt
30/11/2020 Duración: 49minDuring this episode, we review the first few days of Missouri Firearms season. To say it went off with a bang would be an understatement. Matt was fortunate to find success on the third morning of the season as a familiar 10-pointer showed himself. We break down the hunt, topography features, behavior, previous encounters, and hunts, that lead to this success. The buck barely covered 60 yards before piling up insight. This action was pretty fast, but, we captured it all on film, so be sure to follow along on the Youtube Channel to catch that action. Just two days after Matt's success on the lease, Matt took Michael Schupbach (brother-in-law) out for his first hunt in many years. With limited time to be in the woods, Michael wanted to put his tag on some venison, little did he know, this first deer of the morning was a 20 inch wide 6 pointer! This buck almost got away, but Michael got the green light and delivered a lethal shot. This happened to be Michael's first buck! So we were thrilled to document

DIY Sportsman - Missouri Rut Recap
27/11/2020 Duración: 37minThis podcast is a rut recap from my 3rd annual Missouri hunt. This hunt starts with a day-by-day breakdown of what areas were scouted, what decision was made based on deer sign available at the time and the overall context of peak breeding timeframe. Overall, I managed to spot around 25 deer in the four days of hunting the big rolling timber, and had shot opportunities, as did other people in the group. The back end of the podcast recaps more of a lessons learned, and strategy changes based on hindsight. It also dives into advice for others finding themselves in the same type of scenario, which might have been different than what I did with the group hunt atmosphere and location.
