With predator hunting in full swing, this week's show has a lot of great information.  This week, the guys have on Heath Baker with Predator Tactics on to talk about all things coyote and predator hunting.  Heath gets into all kinds of details about how he hunts coyotes.  He talks about planning your set up for wind and vantage points, what calls he likes using and for how long, and how he changes what he does based on the area he's hunting and the time of year.  Heath also touches on bobcats and what differences there are between setting up for them versus coyotes.  We also get into his favorite sounds to use.     Heath even breaks out his calls to give listeners an idea of the different coyote vocals. Dan is joined by Nate Thomas of the Missouri Woods and Water podcast to discuss Dan's 2nd trip to South Dakota to hunt mule deer. The guys kick the episode off by talking about how Dan got permission from his wife to go back after he struck out in October.  Then, the guys break down the strategy that Dan used when it came to locating deer and putting himself in position for a shot opportunity. Things turned around pretty dramatically for the second half of Ohio's 2020 week long gun season.  Opening day harvest numbers were down pretty significantly but hunters made up for that shortfall during the second half of the season.  Deer harvest numbers closed out the week with the total harvest being higher than the previous three year average.  Our luck turned around as well with both Jake and Jeff's wife Amber tagging deer!  Hopefully everyone throughout the state had a safe and enjoyable gun season.   Ohio Huntsman is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. With everyone sharpening chainsaws and preparing to get some work completed, we wanted to take a moment to discuss what is impactful and what is not. There are so many time wasting techniques out there that seem to grab the attention and distract away from sound habitat management practices.  The goal while working on a property is to improve the deer herd and its top-end quality, so to do that, we can't waste time on techniques such as, mock scrapes, water holes, monoculture grass plantings, and kill plots. These practices may just help you kill what deer are already on the property. However, practices such as old field management, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, edge feathering, and destination food plots actually provide the local deer with more resources to improve their fitness. These practices are impactful and should be implemented during this habitat season.  Please make a difference this winter! For years now we have done podcasts on various subjects touching every category included in land management practices. But we continue to learn how people best learn from podcasts and the topics of land management. So as we enter into the land management season for most hunters, we thought it would be best to start a new podcast series explaining from start to finish the different vegetation types you should be managing, starting with grasses, forbs, shrubs, trees, and invasive species. This week is the introduction to the new series!  We will take a category and tackle it each week, so for instance, the next week, we will talk all about grasses! We will break down the roles that grasses should play in wildlife management and what roles they do not. In addition, we will discuss how to best manage them and what composition they should ideally be found in. John Wallace, @wildgamecook, hails from Ohio, and works for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever.  John starts out by sharing how he and his sons at one point had 5 whitetails hanging in his garage.  He goes into detail how he approaches the idea of processing your own deer and  how he got into butchering his own game.  He makes the correlation that a self hunted, self processed animal always tastes better.  He also goes through the parts of the deer that are hardest to cut, most finicky, and most work.  That is a professional move here.  Tricks the mind, and saves the fun stuff for last.  Nick also poses the idea, bringing your cutting table up to counter height (36 inches).  Helps keep cutters standing straight up. This week the guys are breaking down a couple of rut hunts that Parker had last week, resulting in filling his third buck tag for the season in Alabama. There were a lot of things that went into this hunt. 1) The grind. Perhaps one thing most people who kill a lot of public land bucks share in common is the desire to grind for as long as it takes. Go the extra mile, wake up 3 hours earlier, go places many are not willing to go, and do it for however long it takes. 2) Understanding thermals. As Parker talks about these hunts, he shares how much having a good understanding of thermals has contributed to his success more than almost anything. It's not hard to read buck sign and know what area to hunt. The hard part is knowing where to set up to get the opportunity to kill those bucks. I traveled down to the state of Iowa for the first time to perform a firearms deer hunt. The gun tags for non-residents take significantly fewer points to draw than do non-resident archery tags. In some zones, this could allow a hunting opportunity nearly every year, in a timeframe that doesn't interfere with any other rut hunting. My primary strategy with no prior boots-on-the-ground knowledge was to utilize e-scouting with an emphasis on expected hunter pressure to determine the best locations. In addition to breaking down how the strategy worked out, I also talk about whether or not I'd plan on doing another shotgun hunt in the future versus applying for points towards an archery tag every few years.
