Justin explains how drugs and bad decisions got him convicted, and while in prison he met another inmate who let him read some if his hunting magazines. This led to Justin becoming interested in deer hunting. Three years later, and now a free man, Justin hit the Florida swamps running trying to lean as much as he could about how deer move through the landscape. Like most, the first couple years were a struggle as the deer numbers were and low and the the hunter pressure was high. But, Justin didn't give up and  continued to push on and learn as much as he could in order to get the job done. Back by popular demand, Southern Ground is kicking off the Local Legends series. This week we're talking with an absolute legendary deer killing machine, Jim Forbes. Jim has been hunting the mountains of Virginia for his whole life and has learned things that have upped his odds in the deer woods. Like so many local legends we've talked to in the past, Jim makes it clear that he's not hunting deer, he's hunting old mature bucks. Mr. Forbes continuously says "food is everything in these mountains", and for good reason. He talks with us about just how important it is to find the hot oak trees in the mountains, with red oak acorns being his personal favorite. This makes sense as he tells us that his most successful time is in the latest part of the rut. Several things stick out to us about Jim. First of all, he is very calculated about his approach. This week on the show we update the listeners on the status of the new CWD surveillance area in North Central Ohio.  The disease surveillance area is made up of Wyandot county as well as portions of Hardin and Marion counties.  This new area was created due to 2 wild deer that were harvested and tested positive for CWD during the 2020/2021 whitetail deer season.  We also discuss the ending of the previous deer surveillance area in Holmes and Tuscarawas counties due to no additional positive tests during the 3 year surveillance period.  Lastly, we discuss some of our personal thoughts on what this means for the future of hunting in Ohio if CWD begins to spread throughout the wild whitetail deer population.   Photo Credit:  Ohio Division of Wildlife   Ohio Huntsman is Powered by Simplecast Learn more about your ad choices. Some of the major habitat changes such as a timber harvest, adding cattle to recreational property, edge feathering, and. many other very visual techniques. You have to mentally prepare for this!  With our own ongoing projects beginning we walk you through firsthand the ways that we have begun to accept the imminent changes to our property. The best way we found to prepare, is to have an end goal in mind for that specific acre being impacted. What is the desired future condition? What is the best and fastest practice to get me? Will and his family have left a positive and legacy impact on this recreational property.  This farm now has diversity, whereas before it was a homogeneous, closed-canopy forest before with a few dotted food plots. However,, those days are gone! With the timber harvested as recommended, access was improved, as was the diversity of the plant communities, increased woody browse and cover.
