Our Summer series begins this Sunday. It is entitled, "Follow Me". The series is taken from the Gospels and the foundational thought is that following Jesus leads to some amazing places. Over the course of the next couple of months, we will talk about things like abundant living, salvation, forgiveness, hope and comfort. If you start to consider all the benefits of following Jesus, you will soon discern that the list is bountiful and endless. Each week, we will realize the extent of God's blessings and the gifts that are ours. It is easy to take for granted all that we have been freely given, but each gift came at a great cost. Sunday, as we conclude "Those People", we will be looking at those who are critical and hurtful. Those folks who nit-pick, who are very negative, and find constant fault with anything that we do. We find those people everywhere we go; at home, at work, in the shopping mall and even at church. Often, we empower them to rob us of our confidence, our self-esteem and our happiness. Nothing that we do pleases them and they are not shy in expressing their opinion. We all have "those people" in our lives; and frankly, sometimes we become that person. May I remind you that it is a tough world out there and plenty of criticism and negativity to go around. Thus, we need more words of affirmation and encouragement, especially in the church. What did your mama teach you when you were young, "If you can't say something good about somebody, then don't say anything at all". Turns out that was not only right, it's also scriptural. Hypocrisy is ripe in the church, It's time to go back to our roots - Love God. Love People. Support the show

A hypocrite is easy to spot. They aren't genuine, always pretending to be something they aren't. They behave differently when they are with different crowds. They are one person today and somebody completely different tomorrow. They seem to serve both God and man. No one is really sure who they really are. I hate hypocrites! It is my sworn duty to call them out and set them straight. I am going to confront every one of them I can (in Christian love, of course). I can't wait to purify our congregation. But wait just a minute. Before I start, I may need to change a thing or two, or a hundred. I may need to be sure that I'm consistent and authentic. I may need to be sure that I'm the same on Monday as I am on Sunday. After careful consideration, I realize my own hypocrisy. Looking in the mirror can be telling and tough. Maybe the hardest person to confront is ourselves. I better go back to finding fault in others. Looking at me is too tough.Support the show

All of us have known people who have done their best to control, manipulate and force their will upon us. Even those of you who aren't married know exactly what I'm talking about. "Those People" continues this week and we focus on manipulators. The scripture indicates that this has been a problem since the beginning of time, commencing in the Garden of Eden and is still common practice now. We will teach you this weekend how to recognize when you are being manipulated and how to break the power of manipulators in your life. There is a good chance that you might even become aware of those control-freak tendencies in your life. All of us have been needy, critical, manipulative or hypocritical. We have simply been difficult to get along with, difficult to live with. People who will abuse your kindness and take advantage of your generosity. No matter what, you can't do enough for them. We will learn the difference between relief and restoration and how we can minister to people without enabling them. Maybe you should bring that overly-needy person in your life this weekend, so they can see the light. Or maybe, you might figure out that you are that person. Don't miss "Those People". We continue to write new chapters of our story as we move through this transformational series, "My Story". This weekend we are going to focus on a beautiful love story which features Ruth and Boaz. If you recall the story, you realize that many good things happened because Ruth made a decision to STAY when leaving would have been an easier choice. All of us have faced that same decision at critical moments in our life. Should I stay or should I go? Often, it's prudent to just go, to get out of Dodge, to run. But, sometimes, God makes it clear we should STAY. We should put in the hard work, or deal with the mess, or find the strength to forgive or to humbly apologize. Everyone has a story to tell. Parts of that story we are proud to tell, other parts we would rather not mention. We determined that allowing God to help write our story makes it a story worth telling. In order for us to have a great story out there in the future, we have to make wise decisions today. Thus, there are things in all of our lives that we have to give up. Things we have to simply stop doing. I'm sure that for all of us it is something different. It could be an addiction, a bad relationship, a gossiping tongue or a complete reliance on technology. But, whatever it is, it has a very negative effect on our story. So, this Sunday, as we continue to write our stories, we will focus on what we need to stop. I hope you are remembering to pray about what you decided to start and that great things are happening in your life.Support the show

What a great Resurrection weekend we have to look forward to. We will focus on the heart of the gospel, the foundation of our faith...the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. It is a distinct proclamation and is what makes Christianity unique among religions. We serve a risen Lord! If Jesus can defeat death, He can do anything!
