Pulp Crazy is dedicated to spreading the word on classic pulp literature. This is the podcast version, but a companion videocast is available on the website at http://pulpcrazy.com. Pulp characters, stories and creators are discussed Characters such as Conan the Barbarian, the Shadow, Doc Savage, Tarzan of the Apes and many more. Authors discussed include Robert E. Howard, H.P. A tale that chronicles the secret origin of Santa Claus, "Roads" written by Seabury Quinn with remarkable illustrations by Virgil Finlay. "Roads" first appeared in the January 1938 issue of Weird Tales, but has been reprinted several time since. It is currently available as an eBook for a very affordable price of $2.99.     In this episode I will be discussing The Festival by H.P. Lovecraft. I would like to thank the Lovecraft eZine guys for bringing it to my attention on their recent video chat. The Festival appeared in the January 1925 issue of Weird Tales. The story is set during Christmas time or more appropriately, the Yuletide. The Festival is one of the first Cthulhu Mythos stories. Lovecraft's visit to Marblehead, Massachusetts in 1922 is said to have inspired the story. The tale seems to be set in the early 1920's and features a nameless narrator returning to Kingsport, Massachusetts, the home of his ancestors.     In this episode I discuss a Cthulhu Mythos tale written by Robert E. Howard. The Thing on the Roof first appeared in the February 1932 issue of Weird Tales. Howard sold it to Weird Tales for $40.00, but later said he would have let it go for free, just to see it in print. He was quite fond of it. The story is set in the early 1930's, and focuses on the legend surrounding the Temple of the Toad God. Howard's occult tome, Nameless Cults plays a big part of the story.     In this episode I discuss "Black Destroyer" by A.E. Van Vogt. The story first appeared in the July 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction and features the first appearance of Coeurl. Many believe this story ushered in the Golden Age of Science Fiction and is a strong influence on Ridley Scott's "Alien". Coeurl, the main antagonist still receives a lot of exposure today thanks to role playing games such as Final Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder. His many talents and unique ability to change his appearance really set him apart from the other pulp heroes. A combination of Doc Savage and the Shadow, yet unique enough to stand on his own, the Avenger continues to have a fairly strong following today.
