Episode 9: Durian daze
03/04/2018 Duración: 39minGeraldine has flown to Jakarta to visit Eliza and her family. They hit the city's furniture shops and discuss whether round tables lead to better dinner parties? But their plans for a dose of culture go awry. Eliza and Geraldine brave Jakarta's terrible traffic to visit the new modern art museum, only to find that it's closed for three months. These kind of frustrations punctuate life in Indonesia. The women also discuss the pressures on families during school holidays and the bliss of being freed from the daily routine. Episode 8: What's wrong with losing?
27/03/2018 Duración: 35minWhat's wrong with losing? It's been three days since the Australian cricketers admitted to ball tampering in South Africa. Eliza is a huge cricket fan but hasn't liked the 'vibe' of the team for a while. The boorish behaviour on the pitch, the vitriolic send-offs and the win-at-all-costs mentality is ugly. Geraldine thinks the problem may lie in the corporatisation of sport. Eliza reveals that she falls into the trap of only doing things she's good at. She's tried to change that in Indonesia. Finally, Geraldine discusses Hugo Weaving's play at the Sydney Theatre Company. Episode 7: An Indonesian tragedy
20/03/2018 Duración: 32minThis week Eliza and Geraldine discuss a memoir from former journalist, Cynthia Banham. She survived a horrible plane crash in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2007 which killed 21 people, including five Australians. Her story is about determination in the face of adversity. But it’s also about love and gratitude for the help you receive after a traumatic event. One of the victims of the crash - the journalist Morgan Mellish – used to live in Eliza’s house in Jakarta. The women talk about how the relationship between Australia and Indonesia has evolved since that terrible accident. And they also muse about the secret to a happy life. Episode 6: Being a "Good Enough Mother" & not-so-good yogi.
13/03/2018 Duración: 38minThis week's Long Distance Call starts with yoga. Geraldine loves it but Eliza finds it dull and would rather go for a run. Geraldine had a terrific weekend touring Sydney's hidden gardens and both women reveal their nerves about entertaining at home. Do kids need to learn Chinese language when they're four? Not necessarily. Geraldine tells Eliza about the "Good Enough Mother" movement from the 1970s. Finally, the women agree that President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner is a dill. And they worry about the rise of shady political players in Indonesia.
