  • Dirty Old Man Syndrome

    07/04/2021 Duración: 32min

Elizabeth Marcus is my guest. She is the author of Don't Say a Word: A Daughter's Two Cents. The book is about Elizabeth's parents, Edna and Leo, a perpetually warring, tyrannical pair in their 80s. They begin wintering In Mexico, where they abandon their usual prudence to embrace adventure and a bevy of sketchy new friends. Soon, Edna adopts a pair of shyster builders whom she trusts over her own architect-daughter Elizabeth, and farcical house results. Blithely indifferent to the calamities that result, the pair refuse all help from their too-compliant only child. Though unique in its loony details, Don’t Say A Word! will resonate with beleaguered adult-children everywhere who will recognize the special misery of watching their parents become taken over by dementia. Caring for a parent, spouse, or relative who cannot care for themselves due to age, infirmity, or illness is one of the noblest human activities. • Author Lee Gutkind - My Last Eight Thousand Days

    11/11/2020 Duración: 26min

I interview Lee Gutkind, author of My Last Eight Thousand Days. This is his 17th book, and I couldn't put it down. "This revealing, candid, and vivid portrait of one man’s view of aging written by the man who played a crucial role in establishing literary, narrative nonfiction in the marketplace and in the academy, examines male aging in a way we’ve not seen before." In My Last Eight Thousand Days, Gutkind turns his notepad and tape recorder inward, taking his skills as an immersion journalist to perform a deep dive on himself. Here, he offers a memoir of his life as a journalist, editor, husband, father, and Pittsburgh native, recounting not only his many triumphs, but also exposing his missteps and challenges. • Keep It All In Perspective

    12/08/2020 Duración: 20min

We are smack in the middle of summer 2020 and there's a lot going on. Well, there's also a lot that isn't going on or happening because of the virus. Some of us are working from home. Some of us are out of work. Vacations have been canceled, postponed, or modified. We've got politics, politics, and more politics. Breaking news, fake news. With an election looming right around the corner, social unrest, protesting, rioting, racism, COVID-19. I'll say COVID-19 again. A challenge to health care system issues and concerns about our children returning to school. Smoldering heat in some parts of the country, which makes wearing these masks particularly challenging. And we're being encouraged to refrain from or limit gatherings. That means different things to different people. But one thing I think we can all agree on, there's a lot going on. And with so much going on, I think it's real easy to lose perspective. when I say it's easy to lose perspective. Don't worry. I am not going to tell you what to think or

  • Be Brave and Get The Medical Help You Need As You Get Older

    24/06/2020 Duración: 12min

Age may bring wisdom but it also brings a greater chance of health problems, and some health problems might require surgery to make you better. We have a great conversation with Capital Health Care Network's Delores Moore, or as everyone likes to call her, Ms. D. She is an administrative assistant, who will soon be celebrating her 85th birthday. She recently had a knee replacement surgery. She knew she needed it done, and with the strong encouragement of her eldest daughter, she had it done, and soon will be taking care of her other knee. If you or someone you love is elderly and needs surgery, there is good news: Health care, in general, is doing a much better job of caring for the elderly, and that means better outcomes after surgery. The older patient deserves the same quality of care and the same access to information needed to make health care decisions as younger patients. That means, first and foremost, not making surgery decisions based solely on one factor: chronological age. Geriatrics is the spe

  • The Importance of Staying Connected During COVID-19

    04/06/2020 Duración: 08min

Our topic today is going to be focused on the importance of staying connected during COVID-19. And I'm really speaking more to people who have family members in long-term care settings like nursing homes or assisted living. But I think there's value here for all of us. Even if you are not in one of those settings or you don't have a family member or a loved one in one of those settings. Here in Ohio, as in most states, visitation has been prohibited in nursing homes. Now, our Governor just signed a new law, which is going to take effect soon, that will allow visitation, outdoor visitation for assisted living communities. But the nursing homes on that front, they're still saying no to visitation. And what we know as health care providers is that there is a cost associated with this stance. A cost to our residents. And I understand, we all understand why it has to be done. Because we're trying to protect a very vulnerable population. But we also believe that quality of life matters and that we have to figure
