Somehow depicting outer space before we even made it out there, and with some of the most breathtaking visuals ever put to film, 2001 recently had an IMAX re-release which really let the amazingly unique and trippy views of outer space and wormholes shine. It's a gorgeous looking movie set in 20,000BC with long, beautiful shots of the uncompromising wilderness, acted in an ancient language (with subtitles) and tells the story of the first man who ever bonded with a dog. On the 20th episode of Piecing It Together, returning co-host TJ Kross and I discuss the Uncharted Live Action Fan Film. Uncharted is based on the hit video-game series, one that always made sense for a film but every time Hollywood started trying to get one off the ground it would lose momentum, directors or actors and go back to the drawing board. All the while, fans asked for the actor Nathan Fillion to play the role of Nathan Drake, and somehow, director Allan Ungar finally made it happen. At 15 minutes, this fan film is unlike anything we've ever covered on the show before, but it still made for a great conversation with plenty of other movie (and video-game) inspirations to talk about. On the 16th episode of Piecing It Together, co-host Josh Bell and I discuss American Animals. It's a true story that's so crazy they had to make a point to tell us in the beginning that it's not "based on a true story," but it "is a true story." From director Bart Layton, the story focuses on a group of four guys, led by Warren (Evan Peters) and Spencer (Barry Keoghan), who bored with their mundane existences decide to try to rob priceless books from a museum to sell on the black market. On this special episode of Piecing It Together, I interview filmmaker Joe Lujan and actress/radio personality Corey Taylor, the organizers of this year's Las Vegas 48 Hour Film Project. The 48 Hour Film Project is an event that happens in cities all over the world where teams of filmmakers are tasked with a specific set of instructions and have to make an entire short film in 48 hours. On the 14th episode of Piecing It Together, returning co-host Kris Krainock and discuss two movies (a first for this show) that not only happen to be two of the best movies of the year so far, but they both share a very important puzzle piece in the classic film Taxi Driver. First Reformed was written & directed by Paul Schrader (who of course also wrote Taxi Driver) and deals with a pastor played by Ethan Hawke who begins to spiral out of control from the pressure of trying to balance the political desires of the church and what he knows in his heart God would think is the right way to live in this world.
