Sometimes you find yourself in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica, training jiu jitsu and spending time with close friends. These are some of my favorite trips, and I always enjoy sitting down and picking the brains of experts in their fields. As usual, we covered much more than just jiu jitsu, as these conversations often span life in general, and business. We definitely spent some time unpacking and discussing the recent multi-million dollar injury award to a white belt jiu jitsu student, and the potential impact on jiu jitsu academies worldwide. Henry Akins began training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rickson Gracie Acadamy on Pico blvd in West LA. Shortly after he started he became the secretary at the acadamy and was spending 70 hours a week there watching and participating in all of the classes. Fridays are generally for Q and A, but not this Friday. Last week's Friday episode generated a few comments that I personally believe deserve a more thorough explanation and dissection. Nick was born in Hollywood Florida. He spent his childhood training to be Batman and planning his next big adventure. He grew up on the move and lived in 5 states by the time he was twelve. This only made him more adaptable and comfortable with integrating into any environment. His teen years took a turn and were rocky to say the least. Nick was forced into juvenile detention at the age of twelve. After shaking his past Nick needed to find a new direction. Nick joined the Marine Corps at 19 but not without a fight. Because of his troubled youth, Nick had to seek legal counsel just to be accepted. He suffered from a wrist injury within his first week of boot camp. He spent five and a half months in basic training but graduated company honor grad. It was his perseverance through adversity that set the tone for his future and a foreshadowing of things to come. Mike spent 18 years in the US Army and as a government contractor for OGA (Other Government Agency, it was probably the CIA but who really knows these days). He served as a SGM (Sergeant Major) in Special Forces in various positions and deployed multiple times to combat theaters. He is an expert in Counter-Terrorism, security, and crisis management operations and is the host of the Fieldcraft Survival and Mike Force Podcast. Dallas Alexander was a member of Joint Task Force 2 (JTF 2), an extremely high-readiness and precise special operations forces unit. JTF 2 exists to protect Canadian national interests and combat terrorism and threats to Canadians at home and abroad.
