A Massachusetts bill has been introduced that would raise the age of Juvenile Court jurisdiction from 18 to 21 years old. Proponents of the bill argue that the brain doesn’t fully develop until around the age of 24 or 25. Rather than be tried and sentenced in the state’s adult criminal system, juvenile offenders would instead be provided with access to mental health and behavioral programming. According to multiple reports, The American Farm Bureau Federation, which uses volunteer shoppers in all 50 states to survey prices, found in its 40th annual Thanksgiving dinner survey, that the cost of Thanksgiving dinner shows moderate decline this year: about a 5% decrease from 2024. There is an update in the investigation into the tragic Boston Public Schools school bus accident that killed 5-year-old Lens Joseph in Hyde Park back in April of this year. The Boston Globe reports that there is a video recording that was shown to them that shows the bus driver did not appear to be watching the boy and his cousin after they exited the bus and where they were going. The video also showed the driver appearing to look down at the dashboard, not straight ahead when the bus hit and ran over Lens Joseph. A recent proposal by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) would allow sewage overflows into the Charles River by declassifying it as “safe to swim,” a designation that allows the waterway to be “occasionally subject to short-term impairment of swimming or other recreational uses.” The MWRA was set to vote on the proposal but tabled the vote. It's unclear how they will proceed but advocates of keeping the Charles River, Alewife Brook, and other local waterways sewage free view the postponement as a victory. There is a bit of controversy over proposed legislation called the “Massachusetts Survivors Act.” The bill proports to provide some legal consideration for survivors of domestic and sexual violence who subsequently commit acts of violence against others. Attorney Wendy Murphy who specializes in women’s constitutional and civil rights, criminal justice policy, and sexual and domestic violence feels this legislation is unrealistic and provides too much consideration for people who are convicted of crimes against others irrespective of what violence they might have suffered early in their life. Within the last week since the House Oversight Committee released the Jeffrey Epstein emails, more of Epstein’s dealings have come to light. Some emails revealed that Epstein made a sizable donation to former Harvard University president Larry Summers’ wife, Elisa New, a prominent Harvard poetry professor, which enabled her to expand her academic reach. According to the Boston Globe, this donation or “gift” did not appear in Harvard's 2020 report on Epstein donations to the university.
