Fasting is not meant to be an exercise that proves we are serious about Jesus any more than something that sways God to answer our prayers in the way they want. They are meant to shift our perspective and take the weight of the world off of our shoulders. Isaiah promised that a child would be born to Israel that would be called the Prince of Peace, a type of ruler that didn't dominate, but offered shalom...peace...wholeness...completeness for those that followed his reign. 800 years before the birth of Jesus, Isaiah prophesied that a Messiah would be born. He had 4 names; Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Jesus is portrayed as an Everlasting Father but what does that really mean? This Hebrew word for everlasting is not about a duration of time, it's much bigger than that. How does Jesus as an Everlasting Father change your perspective of life?

The nation of Judah was in chaos. They had aligned themselves with Assyria against the Israel, the Northern Kingdom and Syria. Assyria had come to Judah's aid but was now subjugating them as a vassal state. Isaiah prophesied that a child would be born who would be called a Mighty God who would ultimate rescue them from all things. That child would be born Jesus. Today, many of us are in need of a Mighty God in our lives. What if Jesus is also asking us to be mighty for others? "He Shall Be Called: Mighty God" is now available!

Judah was under the threat of invasion from Assyria, Syria and Israel almost 800 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. They were frustrated and hopeless. A series of terrible kings had given terrible leadership and led them to this place of a divided kingdom and fear of destruction. The prophet Isaiah said that one was coming who would rescue them. This leader was a Wonderful Counselor and he was different. Don't miss the power of this name that can make a difference in your life right now. The story of Judas has been told for thousands of years as the ultimate betrayal of his Rabbi, Jesus. Is that the whole story? I don't think so. The woman with the alabaster jar of pure nard is a picture of someone who truly understand who Jesus is, even before the disciples. She shows us what it looks like to find a great treasure and give everything she had; her past, her present, and her future to him. The Gospels of Mark and Matthew tell the story of Jesus's prophesy of the destruction of the temple a little differently. Matthew includes a string of parables, where Mark does not. A few days before his crucifixion, Jesus prophesied the end of the Jewish world as they knew it. While many believe Jesus is talking about the end of the world at some future point, he tells his disciples that it will happen in their lifetimes and it did. The destruction of the temple in 70ad is still sending shockwaves through the world but it heralded in something new and world changing. "The Gospel of Mark: Birth Pains" is now available!

Jesus gives a chilling rebuke to a scribe about how we live. While religious people and leaders have become adept at wearing carefully constructed masks, Jesus sees through them all and praises a simple woman who has little to give but gives it all instead of the religious elite who only pretend to know God. When one of the scribes, a half theologian/half torah attorney questioned Jesus about the most important commandment in all of Torah, he gave him an answer that speaks to us today. As Jesus continued in Jerusalem during Passover, the Pharisees and Herodians, two groups that couldn't stand each other, teamed up to challenge Jesus on paying taxes to Ceaser. A Jesus reenters the temple, he is challenged by the priests, scribes and elders about his authority to do and say the things that he has. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, he went straight for the temple where he confronted the priests and everyone changing money and selling passover sacrifices in the temple yard. He was mad. The Triumphal Entry by Jesus was not just the beginning of an important week, it was a political statement against Rome, Pilate, and the religious leaders in Jerusalem. While he often stayed out of direct political discourse, Jesus gets political in a big way. "The Gospel of Mark: Jesus Gets Political" is now available!

There are times, no matter how hard you try, plan or work, life just doesn't go as planned. Sometimes life just gives you lemons. Contemplative, listening, silent prayer has been a cornerstone of many serious followers of Jesus. Though seen as controversial by those who believe prayer should be a type of structured homily, opening yourself in a profound way to hear from God and be at peace with a quiet surrounding has been practiced by some of our greatest heroes in the Old and New Testaments. The Bible is our fence to ensure our thoughts don't run away with us but having unstructured silent time to remove all distractions without the expectation of reciting a prayer can have a profound effect on your prayer life. If you have never considered contemplative prayer, this is great introduction to something new (and very old) that may change you and the world around you.
