Remembering the lives and Hall of Fame careers of two coaching legends: John Thompson and Lute Olson
31/08/2020 Duración: 01h11minCollege basketball has lost two of its greatest coaches ever in the span of only four days. This episode honors their memories and gets into some personal storytelling, too. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open with a long discussion about the late John Thompson Jr., Georgetown's greatest, who you can make a case for as the most important coach in college basketball history. And after the Thompson talk, the guys discuss Lute Olson (42:30), who is the most important basketball figure in the history of Arizona -- and the second-best coach in the Pac-8/Pac-10/Pac-12 to John Wooden. The tail end of the podcast touches on a bit of relevant news (1:02:00) on college basketball's start date and the NCAA trademarking "Battle in the Bubble." Two podcasts in one day? In August? We're here for you. This is a quickie emergency pod that addresses serious news that emerged late Wednesday morning: Will Wade, according to NCAA findings, has made at least 11 offers to players and/or former LSU prospects that included impermissible benefits. This information comes via an ESPN.com report, which cited documents obtained by the NCAA. This emergency pod not only lays out those details but also explains a potential timeline and discusses whether or not Wade is going to remain LSU's coach in the short-term -- because the long-term looks grim. Jay Wright leaving Villanova doesn't seem likely; when college basketball's season should start; welcome back, Marshall Henderson!
26/08/2020 Duración: 59minThe podcast is thankful that despite what's going to be the longest offseason in college basketball history, there are indeed headlines that surface weekly that provide us with fodder for the pod. Today's ep opens with a discussion on scuttlebutt about Jay Wright and the potential he'd leave Villanova for the 76ers job. Then the guys get to Norlander's scoop earlier in the week that detailed the four potential season-start dates (26:30) the NCAA and its power brokers are deliberating this week and next. Stick around for Norlander's suggestion on how the season should start and Parrish's point about Christmas break. The ep wraps by welcoming back Ole Miss legend Marshall Henderson (47:00) who was announced Tuesday night as a graduate manager for the program. This could be fun! NBA Draft Profiles: If Deni Avdija played college basketball last season, he would've almost certainly been a top-10 player
21/08/2020 Duración: 27minThe fifth discussion in our draft-profile series focuses for the first time on an international prospect. Deni Avdija is now being regarded as a better NBA pick than all but maybe three players who played college basketball last season. What to know, why he's intriguing, why his situation should never be compared to Luka Dončić. Parrish and Norlander did their homework, and we think you'll enjoy getting to know more about one of the biggest 2020 draft risers over the past six months. Gonzaga and Baylor agree to huge game for upcoming season; NCAA officially embracing playing college basketball in bubbles
18/08/2020 Duración: 49minIf Gonzaga and Baylor can maneuver on a dime and schedule each other for next season, then of course there's real optimism college basketball can pull off a regular season for 2020-21. This episode leads with Norlander's scoop on Few and Drew's coup, and gets into a lot of the scenarios and scuttlebutt Parrish and Norlander have heard from coaches in the past week. We also got news as of late: the NCAA is officially embracing using bubbles and we know college basketball will have a definitive word on its schedule start time and details by mid-September. NBA Draft Profiles: James Wiseman played three games in college. He's still in the mix to go No. 1. Is it justifiable?
13/08/2020 Duración: 33minThis week's prospect analysis looks at all of the off- and on-court attributes and setbacks that make James Wiseman a fascinating case. Wiseman is our fourth profile so far, and he's the final player with a realistic chance of being selected No. 1 overall in October. The biggest question we have: Will the fact he quit Memphis in December impact where he's selected two months from now? The Pac-12 cancels all basketball games until January. Are all other conferences destined to soon make the same decision?
11/08/2020 Duración: 01h06minWhat was mostly expected Tuesday: the Big Ten and Pac-12 announcing they were pushing football to the spring. What wasn't? The Pac-12 also announcing it will not have any sports of any kind played before January. So 12 Pac-12 men's basketball programs just had more than 100 nonconference games taken out from underneath them. Truth is, the rest of the sport is probably going to follow suit, but those decisions aren't expected until September. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open this pod by discussing the Pac-12, and then they get to speculating and building out what college basketball and the NCAA needs to do in order to best ensure college hoops doesn't end up like college football (21:50). Parrish reveals his template for holding college basketball's regular season and NCAA Tournament in 2021, while Norlander reveals some of his details on a 2021 NCAA Tournament that would be hosted and played in one state and mostly one city: Indianapolis. NBA Draft Profiles: Why Anthony Edwards is going to be the toughest yes-or-no decision for any team drafting in the top three
07/08/2020 Duración: 26minThe NBA Draft lottery is two weeks away. Whatever teams land in the No. 1, 2 and 3 spots of that lottery will heavily weigh selecting Georgia's Anthony Edwards. He's a lock to go in the top five. But his one-and-done season with the Dawgs was hit-or-miss. Is his floor lower than most are acknowledging? Are analysts doomed to refer to him in the next few months as a "poor man's James Harden"? Hopefully not. Our latest prospect profile episode is here. MaCio Teague returning to Baylor: Are the Bears the Big 12/national preseason favorites? (College Basketball 7/31)
31/07/2020 Duración: 47minThe NCAA’s deadline to withdraw from the 2020 NBA Draft isn’t until next week — but Baylor’s MaCio Teague went ahead and made a decision (1:20). He’ll be back at Baylor. And now, provided Jared Butler also withdraws from the draft, Scott Drew’s Bears look like they’ll be the preseason favorite in the Big 12. So Gary Parrish and Kyle Boone opened this episode of the Eye On College Basketball podcast by discussing Baylor (and the Big 12 in general) before reacting to news that conferences are largely turning toward league-only football schedules (18:30). What, if anything, does that mean for college basketball? And is it even possible to play college football and college basketball outside of a bubble given that Major League Baseball is hitting one bump after another? It’s a fair question to ask. NBA Draft Profiles: Why isn't Obi Toppin in the conversation to be the No. 1 pick?
28/07/2020 Duración: 26minIn the lead-up to October's NBA Draft, the podcast will be adding more episodes to your weekly feed that include breezy but knowledgeable discussions on the biggest and best prospects in the 2020 draft pool. Our second episode of this variety focuses on Obi Toppin, who led Dayton to its best season in school history. Norlander believes Toppin will be the best pro of any player in the 2020 draft, while Parrish is nearly as high on the 22-year-old. And on the topic of his age, it's there that we find the biggest reason for why Toppin isn't regarded as a No. 1 pick by most. Is that justifiable? Gonzaga lost its best player Monday. Here's why Mark Few's program can now be compared to Duke and Kentucky (college basketball 07/20)
21/07/2020 Duración: 36minRather significant headline popped Monday: Gonzaga’s best player bolted on the team and didn’t tell them in advance. Filip Petrusev would’ve been a First Team A-A pick in the preseason had he opted to return, but that’s not the case. Parrish and Norlander react to the news and differ on where they’d slot the Zags heading into the fall. Some behind-the-scenes intel is shared as well, plus a preview of Gonzaga for next season on the whole. There’s more news: Baylor has the No. 1-rated class for 2021 at the moment (22:30). Scott Drew is ushering in what looks to be the golden age of Baylor hoops, and that’s saying something. Remember, there were the Terry Teagle years! Stick around until the end: Norlander’s got some coach/school name marriages to consider. Two big commitments Wednesday: Moussa Cisse is going to Memphis and Jonathan Kuminga is going to the G League (College Basketball 07/15)
16/07/2020 Duración: 01h02minPenny Hardaway and Memphis got a commitment Wednesday from 2020 five-star center Moussa Cisse. Surely nothing will go wrong in the next few months, right? Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander give you the particulars of what to know about the situation surrounding Cisse, and then they get to Jonathan Kuminga's Thursday evening announcement (22:30) that he will be playing in the G League pathway program. That makes for five players who have said no to college and yes to the G League. And then a most interesting discussion on one coach's idea to play a shortened 2020-21 season (30:30) and potential one-year configurations for the 2021 NCAA Tournament. 09/07/2020 Duración: 56minOn Wednesday, the Ivy League made significant news in college sports when it announced all organized sports within the league would not be permitted through the end of the fall semester. 06/29: Emoni Bates—WAY ahead of schedule—announces his intention to play for Michigan State. And we think he will.
29/06/2020 Duración: 59minFor the second straight Monday, a No. 1-rated basketball recruit has proven skeptics wrong and announced a commitment to playing college basketball over more lucrative alternatives. On Monday, Emoni Bates made his choice to play for Michigan State, if and when he's eligible to do so. Bates is in the class of 2022 and has made no clear intention of reclassifying to 2021. Bates, 16, regarded as one of the two or three best prospects this century. Will he wind up playing for Tom Izzo? Norlander and Parrish both say yes and present the evidence and indications as to why. The second half of the pod is dedicated to the Big East and UConn (28:00), a reunion which will become official on Wednesday. With UConn going to the Big East, the guys power-rank every program, 1 through 11, and project the hierarchy of the league over the next five seasons. 22/06/2020 Duración: 01h13minBig-time college hoops news got the week going on Monday. No. 1-rated 2020 recruit Cade Cunningham announced he will stay at Oklahoma State for next season, despite the 2021 postseason ban the NCAA handed the school. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open the podcast with perspective and reaction, then get into the Big East's 21 minority assistants coming together to rally for social justice (24:00), led by their goal to get Black Lives Matter patches on uniforms for all of next season. And what about Luka Garza (41:00)? Parrish caught up with him last week. Norlander poses a question: has college basketball ever had a player facing the scenario Garza is right now? 06/11: Zion Williamson’s ex-agent is hell-bent on trying to expose Zion, Nike and Duke
11/06/2020 Duración: 01h14minIf you thought the countersuit against Zion Williamson would fade away, you'd be wrong. This week, attorneys representing Gina Ford, Williamson's ex-agent, filed a new suit for consideration and cited text-message evidence and allegations regarding a wealthy home, and multiple luxury vehicles, both tied to the Williamson family during his time at Duke. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander spend the first half this podcast discussing the matter. Then they turn to Norlander's story from this week about new head coaches adjusting to the job during pandemic (33:00) and move on to top-rated prospect Jonathan Kuminga (52:00), who is expected to announce next week a reclassification to the class of 2020, plus the implied likelihood he heads for the G League. Also, just a brutal Trivia Time! showing by Norlander wraps the pod.
