This period saw the rise of secular ideologies, such as nationalism and socialism, as well as the growing influence of scientific and philosophical rationalism. In response, Pius IX sought to reaffirm the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church and to reassert its authority over society. The Syllabus of Errors itself was a list of 80 propositions that the Catholic Church considered to be false, dangerous, or heretical. These propositions covered a wide range of topics, including religious freedom, separation of church and state, modernism, and the role of the papacy in society. Many of these propositions were drawn from previous papal encyclicals and other official Church documents, while others were taken from secular sources, such as political speeches and newspaper articles.
