Description: When Theodosius was appointed to clean up the mess in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, he was served with a tall order. The Goths were rampaging through the countryside and who could blame them the way they were treated? Theodosius would embrace Christianity in a serious way, but not just Christianity in general, but a specific form of Christianity. Orthodox Catholic Trinitarian Christianity was Theodosius’ choice and he was going to use all of his power to push all other forms of the religion out of the picture. Not only that, he was going to push out any and all other religious faiths, making Trinitarian Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. The First Ecumenical Council, or world-wide synod, which took place at Nicaea in modern day Turkey, involved many of the biggest names of the day and really turned the Roman world on its head. Christianity, which was a heavily persecuted religion, became the preferred religion of the Empire all in the course of a few short years. The canons of the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea were extremely important for the history of Christianity. These canons each come with a story of their own that ties together the past and future of the religion. We will continue to discuss the canons that concerned the clergy and the various ways these canons have been interpreted throughout history. The first ecumenical council, the First Council of Nicaea in 325AD, was a pivotal moment in Christianity. Once the Creed of Nicaea was defined, the bishops at the Council had a number of important issues they needed deal with. The bishops at the council created twenty canons, or rules of faith that created the guidelines the clergy and the laity would follow going forward. Constantine’s purpose for calling an ecumenical council was to stabilize and unify the Roman Empire. For many reasons, the Empire was neither stabilized nor unified. Theological battles were raging inside of the Empire and groups outside of the borders of the Empire were on the move.
