His career has included working as a staff nurse and as director of several hospital departments. As a registered nurse, he supervised diabetes education and received clinical experience in diabetes care and education. When he and his wife, Karen, a registered nurse, learned that they were living in the county with the lowest health ranking in the state of Tennessee, she was instrumental in obtaining a grant for the county for diabetes prevention and education. Stephen authored a community based lifestyle education seminar, which they have been teaching for the past nine years.

As a family they have had great joys, shed tears, gotten frustrated and even had fights, but God has kept them together by His amazing love and grace. They served in the Carolina Conference for over 20 years. Since 2014, Eli has been the ministerial, family ministries and men's ministries director for the Chesapeake Conference. Through the years they have learned that a happy family doesn't happen by accident. Intentionality is a key element in a successful family, as all areas in life.
