Six one, 360 pounds. Sometimes those kills shots don't go as planned or sometimes, despite a double lung shot, the deer finds it's way into terrain or structure that make the wounded deer track undetectable to the hunter.  A trained deer tracking dog can be an immeasurable asset to a hunter in situations just like this and it's the right thing to do out of respect for the animal.  But how does it work?  What should we expect when we call in the dogs?  We invited a panel of volunteer leashed dog deer trackers into the studio to discuss many of the issues surrounding tracking a wounded deer with a trained dog. Hunter recruitment is critical for our sport to survive.  QDMA says that declining hunter participation is one of the single most important issues impacting deer hunting and management today.  But what's to blame?  Is it social media?  Is it a lack of hunter unity? Is it the media or the anti-hunter winning over the middle ground?  These are tough questions to answer, but it'll be essential for us to answer to reverse the trend of declining hunter numbers.  We turned to John Stallone to discuss this topic in-depth as he just wrote a think piece article about the subject. As hunters, we don't consider poachers to be hunters.  Sure the activities may look similar to the non-hunter, but there are vast differences in the approach of taking game.  The obvious difference, is that a hunter does the hunt legally, the poacher illegally. But how do law abiding hunters keep the ill intent from messing up our clean image? You probably can't completely fix that problem, but the Enforcement Division can sure separate the good from the bad.  Lt David Gregory of the Vermont State Fish and Game is all too familiar with poachers, but he says that they don't in anyway represent the vast majority of hunters.  David shares some of his epic arrests on this episode and we talk in detail about a family of poachers with a rap sheet dating back to the 1990s that got pinched once again in 2017.  The activity seems to be taught, not instinctive. So away Joni went on her bucket list hunts, only to find out later after more evaluation and testing, that her life expectancy was longer than two years due to medical advancements for her particular form of a rare auto-immune disease. Today, Joni is still fighting a daily battle against the elements, as her condition can often turn her hands paper white when exposed to cold temperatures.
