In 1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60/6. Felicity Aston MBE is a British Polar Explorer, author, speaker and expedition leader. In 2012, she became the first woman to ski alone across Antarctica, a journey of 1084 miles that took 59 days to complete. That expedition garnered her a Guinness World Record. She has also been elected Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society in London and The Explorers Club in New York. Her love for polar exploration began at the age of 23 at Rothera Research Station on the Antarctic Peninsula, where she monitored the climate as a meteorologist. Her expeditions have taken her to places like Greenland, where she became the first British woman to cross the giant landmass, both the North and South Pole, and to leading numerous record-breaking adventures all over the world, involving all women teams. The story that's so incredible it deserves a second listen.  All the way back in episode 217, Steve joined us to recount his adventure of survival. An avid sailor, naval architect and New York Times best-selling author, Steve Callahan designed and built his 21' sloop the Napolean Solo to sail it across the Atlantic Ocean from Newport, RI to England with plans to compete in a regatta.
