The Pan-American Highway is an 18,000-mile continuous network of roads from the southern tip of South America to the northern tip of Alaska, with the sole exception being the Darien Gap, a 60 mile separation in the road through a nearly impenetrable jungle on the Panama/Colombian border. Most folks opt to go around the gap by boat or plane. Today’s guest, JD Smith, decided to go through the 99 mile long jungle by motorcycle instead. When a crippling amount of debt kept the Strawbridge family from going on family vacations, they quickly began looking for cheap ways to still enjoy an experience together. Being a professional athlete is only one slice of the pie for Heather. Back in 2010, Kyle was sick and tired of feeling terrible about himself and having a hard time playing with his daughter, so he decided to do something about it. Losing a large amount of weight by walking, and eventually running, is no easy task. When Marty's 60th birthday came rolling around, he knew he needed to do something adventurous that took him out of his normal routine and into an entirely different frame of mind. From that longing came the idea to race in the Tour Divide, a 2,750-mile, mostly off-road, mountain bike race from Canada to Mexico along the Continental Divide. Now, at the age of 65, Marty is gearing up this June for another TD attempt. After a serious car accident that left him with limited mobility in his leg, Jason decided he was done letting time slip by that wasn't in the pursuit of some higher goal in places he loved to be. This led him to pursue wilderness-based FKTs (Fastest Known Times). To date, Jason has 35 FKTs in some of the most iconic and beautiful places in the American West. Many of those FKTs are on impressively difficult routes. Originally aired April 24, 2017 Anna-Marie Watson grew up in an outdoor-loving, adventurous family. The adventures continued into adulthood as she served nearly a decade in the British Army. Upon leaving the military, she knew she did not want a standard job and a "normal" life so, what did she do? She flew to New Zealand to bicycle the country. This started a series of adventures that led her to compete in the world half Ironman, running (and winning second place female the Marathon De Sables. She isn't slowing down either. At a young age, Ben and his parents pedaled all over the US on extended bike tours. He credits these early endurance events as part of the foundation that led to his ability to outlast his opponents in traditional sports. However, it wasn’t until college at the University of Montana in Missoula that Ben discovered triathlons in a book while traveling to Alaska.  Once he got back to school he signed up for the local triathlon and was instantly hooked. Ben immediately set his sights on becoming pro. Thomas recently became an empty nester and decided a grand adventure was what he needed. He got together with Churchill Clark, the great-great-great-great grandson of Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition to build a dugout canoe named Bella from a 20 foot Douglas Fir.   He traced his path along the Missouri River all the way to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, a 5-month expedition along the same route Lewis and Clark took when returning to the East Coast.  This epic tale includes everything from puppies, bow fishing, and flooded rivers, to quaint towns, and peaceful moments of solitude.  A book about the experience will be released in March of 2020.
