  • Ep. 722: The Life-Saving Power of Running (or any sport) - Dave Scarpello

    15/04/2021 Duración: 36min

After surviving an armed robbery attack at the age of 26, Dave was told he’d never walk again. Being stubborn, he proved everyone wrong by getting back on his feet in a surprisingly short amount of time. Unfortunately, a few years later he was hit at a stop light by a drunk driver and forced to start back at square one and learn to walk yet again. Three back surgeries later and years of managing chronic pain with prescriptions left Dave in a state of life that he no longer wanted to live in. Something had to change. He walked into the pain clinic that had been treating him and told the doctors he would radically change his life and become healthier. He found peace while walking the streets of Philadelphia for exercise and quickly saw the positive impact it was having on him. After hearing about a neighborhood 5k and learning that you can walk the entire way, he set his sights on simply finishing. It absolutely changed his life. The 5k grew to 10k, and then to a half marathon, and ultimately led him to run the

    08/04/2021 Duración: 52min

JR Harris was introduced to the Boy Scouts while living in New York City. His parents had the foresight to interest their son in things that would spark his curiosity and learning, rather than get caught up in the struggles of everyday life in the projects. This influence has led JR to the most unlikely of wildernesses, completely alone, for the last 50 plus years! When he’s not trekking through Nepal or the Andes, JR owns and operates the oldest Black-owned research and consulting firm in the United States, JRH Marketing Services. He is also the author of Way Out There: Adventures of a Wilderness Trekker, which details a handful of his many adventures in the outdoors. Despite his constant roaming through the most remote locations on Earth, JR still proudly calls New York City his home.Join us today as we talk with a truly remarkable person who has not only built a life around the outdoors and New York City but a life we can all strive to have.https://www.jrinthewilderness.com/Way Out There: Adventures of a Wi

  • Ep. 719: Expand Your Possible - Steve Cannon

    05/04/2021 Duración: 01h02min

Steve’s story is one that’ll get you pumped to start planning your next adventure and eliminate all excuses as to why you can’t or shouldn’t. Steve Cannon runs, fat bikes, kayaks, and skis but he wouldn’t call himself a runner, biker, kayaker, or skier, however. He would most likely refer to himself as an adventurer. Here’s why:Steve has run nearly 100 marathons.Competed in the world’s longest kayak race.  Completed the Tuscobia Winter 150 twice on his fat bike. Finished the Arrowhead 135 three times, and most recently did so unsupported. In 2004, he rode his bike to the starting line of the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon in South Dakota—beginning in Iowa—before running the marathon and continuing on another 1900 miles and 38 days. Completed over twenty RAGBRAIs.Completed eight Gravel World Championships in Nebraska.Completed four Ride-the-Rockies,Completed the Dirty Kanza 200 five times, earning a coveted “1000 Miles of Kanza” goblet in 2017 while also "beating the sun". He was the second person t

  • Ep. 717: How to Pull off an Epic Yearly Adventure With Your Friends - Frazer Buntin

    29/03/2021 Duración: 45min

It’s no surprise that major life transitions are great times to have an adventure. So many of the stories told on this show are from trips where folks are between jobs, taking a gap year, after a divorce or experiencing other life-altering news. But what about the folks in the throes of “normal life”? Is there hope for those folks to have a life-changing adventure or are they forever stuck in weekend warrior mode? If you listen to this show on a regular basis you know the answer is that adventure is all around you, all the time, and tapping into the joys adventures bring doesn’t take months or weeks to accomplish. Today, Frazer gives us an inside look at the winning formula that has allowed him and 12 buddies a trip-of-a-lifetime once a year, every year, for the last 15 years. It’s a simple formula but following the steps rigorously is the only way Frazer and his friends are able to make it happen on a consistent basis. Maybe it’s a formula that you’d be willing to adopt for yourself and/or for your friends t

  • Ep. 715: Becoming Rugged - Christine Reed

    22/03/2021 Duración: 44min

Christine’s love for backpacking started the same way many of the adventures on this podcast start, with a Google search. Her quest that day? To find out what this backpacking thing was all about. After only a few articles into her search, Christine decided to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. It was a huge leap of faith but she immediately got to work to make that dream come true. The funny thing about making a dream a reality is that it’s not what we typically imagine. The realness of life usually gets in the way and what actually happens before, during, and after an adventure is anything but what we plan for. Today we’re going to hear Christine’s story of how her experience hiking the AT changed her and all the adventures that have come before and after it. She has written her experiences in a new book after a life-altering trip on the Wonderland trail called Alone in Wonderland, which can be found at her website, aloneinwonderland.comFollow Christine on social: @ruggedoutdoorswomanOur Sponsors:* Check out T

Nick Neynens is on the show today to explain what this "Vol-Biv" sport is and what it's like to soar up in the air like an eagle with the intention of landing to camp each day. Nick also talks about the Red Bull X-Alps which is an event where paragliders race across the Alps, flying straight-line distances of more than 600 miles! • Ep. 713: Climbing Kilimanjaro to Play Soccer - Laura Youngson

    15/03/2021 Duración: 40min

Back in 2017 while sitting on the couch and watching sports news coverage, Laura noticed the dismal amount of time dedicated to women’s sports. What struck her the most was “the fact that there are more stories about horses than women in the sports pages”. Being a proficient soccer player herself and experiencing the frustrations of minimal coverage and a general lack of opportunities, she decided to do something about it. A quick Google Maps search and a few emails later, Laura devised a plan to elevate women’s sports higher than it has ever gone, literally. The idea was to gather a group of women to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and play an official game of soccer near the summit. The journey became a gathering of 60 women from around the world with referees, goals, etc. all climbing above 18,000 ft. to play a soccer game. Their efforts stand as a Guinness World Record, a testament to their dedication to raising the coverage and opportunity for women in sports, and was the genesis of Equal Playing Field, a non-prof

    11/03/2021 Duración: 41min

As a kid when Marcus wanted to play football and baseball his mom would only allow it after he fulfilled one condition, learn to swim. Even after excelling at track and football, the foundation of swimming was what Marcus always came back to and also excelled in. He eventually went to college on a track and swimming scholarship, giving him a leg up in the sport of triathlons, which he would soon discover. Seeing a lack of diversity in the sport for a multitude of reasons, Marcus began to strategically find ways to break down the barriers in his community to create avenues for new folks, especially those of color and minorities, to try and excel in triathlons. This led him to organize the District Triathlon club in DC as an official 501(c)3. After a handful of successful years growing the community and seeing even more potential, Marcus then decided to start GRIT USA, an adult endurance and multisport development program for triathletes. Today Marcus splits his time between growing GRIT, pursuing his other goa

  • Ep. 711: Lessons From Adventure for Life and Business - Barry Kruse

    08/03/2021 Duración: 50min

On this show, we often hear of the over-civilized nine-to-fiver that becomes so dissatisfied with the daily grind that they give up the world of suit and ties, commutes, and water cooler chats to become a full-time adventurer. What about those of us that find real peace and tranquility in the workplace? What if a full-time job actually led to more adventures? Today we’re talking to Barry Kruse, someone who had the chance to be that full-time adventurer, but left it for a whitecollar career, and couldn’t be happier.
