Because Israel had turned their backs on God and the covenant they had made with Him, they would soon experience the consequences that Jeremiah had reminded them of from the Mosaic Law.

Jeremiah's warnings have been rejected and ignored by the people and leaders of Jerusalem around the turn of the 7th century.
