When it comes to bowhunting whitetails, deer in different regions and even as small as different properties respond differently to pressure. Todays guest, Bryan Dunlap of Michigan, talks about how he has been using pressure from other hunters to his advantage. Bryan talks about how he hunts the smaller "in betweens" of a piece of property where he basically flanks other hunters. He has a very interesting theory on how he focuses more on what other hunters are doing compared to where deer movement. He also shares how sometimes a hunter may not need to go as deep on a piece of property and stick closer to the parking areas and roads. Recently, Kyle, Frank, and Matt headed south to central Florida to work on a new farm. The property owners were looking to improve the overall function of the property, habitat, and wildlife. We went in with high hopes and we weren't disappointed with what we saw.  This property had less than drastic terrain features, yet the habitat types were extremely numerous and ever-changing. In total, the property's highest point was 46 feet and the lowest was 32 feet in elevation. The amazing part about this farm was the amount of cover it produced for species like quail, turkey, and whitetail deer. The cover was everywhere, almost too much! So we prescribed thinning certain areas and adjusting the composition of the cover. Overall the property in Florida was game rich and we break down all the reasons why!  We hope you enjoy the lessons in land management that this property has to share. Dan Born, former board member of BHA and still active member, writer, and outdoor enthusiast resides in Southern Minnesota.  His experience from his upbringing and joining the military has shaped Dan for how he approaches the outdoors.  Dan isn't a gear junky, he isn't chasing new equipment from year to year, but his approach is what i'm guessing, a lot like many of us.  “I want equipment that works well, good quality, and fits me and my style of hunting.  Number one on his list is boots.  Put the bulk of the dollars on what keeps you moving.  Good Footwear is key. No matter if it's in high elevation or flat, low swamps.  Good fit, keeps feet dry, supportive.   Something where money can be saved is in the processing kit.  Dan wrote an article about his outdoor knife roll.  Not a single item eclipses $50.  The items he chose are utilitarian and if get beat up, can get brought back to life quickly, no professional sharpening service needed.  One add that I would put in the kit would be a honing

About two years ago Dan made a bet with Mark Kenyon that if he was ever able to quit his job and go independent that he would make a special trip to Michigan to bowhunt. The first year, Dan used a loophole in the bet to get out of the trip. On this week's podcast we have returning guest Seth Harker to discuss his recent harvest of a mature buck over acorns. This is usually a very tall feat for most as trail cameras played a small role and woodsmanship skills are left to pick up the rest of the pieces. This story is exactly that!  Seth watched this buck throughout the summer months almost daily. He knew the area well that this buck was frequenting. Once season opened, he was high on the target list. With only 1 trail camera image in two weeks, Seth managed to stay on this buck's trail by observing natural food sources. Black oak acorns were falling and the deer and turkey revealed their desired food source at the time. A middle of the season scouting trip found the best location to intercept this buck! This week Parker and Drew are going over some of their main takeaways from hunting the early Alabama opener. With 3 deer on the ground already, it would seem as though the deer movement has been good, however that is not the case for them, or many people they have talked to from the area. The guys talk in depth about the areas that are usually hotspots for the mid October opener, that just haven't produced any sightings, nor do they have the amount of sign that they usually have. They also tell the stories of the deer they have killed, talking further about the effectiveness of a high FOC arrow build & some of the tactics they used to come out of the woods successful.
