The guys discuss Jonathan's introduction to hunting in the mountains of California chasing mule deer with his family. Then halfway through his teens  his family packed up and moved to Missouri.  Jonathan admits that there is a big difference between spot and stalk mule deer hunting and stationary tree stand  fore whitetails.  The guys also get in to Jonathan's approach to hunting public land and how using water ways  including the shore of a  lower than normal lake to backdoor a piece of public. Jeff Benda loves food.  Growing up as a kid on an AirForce Base,  he and his parents enjoyed their time at home in the kitchen.  Whether it was making their own, or hearing about a great new restaurant to try, food was a common event.  Jeff however couldn't realize his second dream of being an outdoors man until becoming an adult.  As a kid, he watched fishing and sport shows Sunday morning before church, read familiar books like My Side of the Mountain.  It wasn't till his friends invited him on a duck hunt back in 2002.  Since then, Jeff has monopolized on his location in North Dakota being able to chase a whole host of animals from the Midwest and Western states. We're on cloud nine! Turkey season is here in the great state of Alabama, and Parker has had a productive week. After not hearing any gobbles in his home range for the first couple of hunts, Parker decided to try out a new area that is supposed to be full of gobbling turkeys. In this episode, you'll hear some of the things that he did to capitalize on the birds. He talks about how having a ton of grit is really his most productive method of hunting... if you work hard enough and don't get discouraged, eventually it'll work out. Going from a place with a heavy decline in turkey population, it's sometimes hard to be too aggressive for risk of possibly ruining one of the few opportunities you'll likely get all season. However, going to better areas has taught Parker a lot about what he can get away with in the turkey woods: crawling, scratching, heck even talking with a group of people (you'll find out). These tactics are important in the moment, but possibly will pay off in the futur

Over the past several years, I've started incorporating more and more ground setups into my hunting routine. Sometimes they're intentional, while other times they're impromptu, but they are always situational. In this episode, I dive into what makes a set up better or worse for a ground hunt as opposed to a hunt from a tree. Certainly there are obvious scenarios in which there are no suitable trees where ground hunting makes sense. However, there are even times and situations where ground hunting in hardwoods could make sense.  Once the location and scenario calls for ground hunting, there are definitely several things that can impact how good or poor the setup is on a micro level. Back cover, front cover, overhead cover, sun location, wind and thermal flips, and expected shot location all play a key role in whether or not you'll get picked off. This week on the show we discuss the Outdoor Foundation's 2020 outdoor participation report.  The report created by the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) and is published at the end of each calendar year and looks at the total number of Americans that report participating in outdoor activities during the year.  The first key finding of the report is that youth participation in outdoor activities continues to decline.  This is concerning to us as the future of hunting and fishing is likely to follow the same trend.  Another key finding of the report is that the percentage of women participating in outdoor activities continues to grow.  Additionally, the report found that nearly half of Americans surveyed did not participate in any outdoor activities.  We also discuss how many of the categories of outdoor activities that are growing in popularity are not that different from hunting and why that leads to even more importance being put on how we represent our community in order to appeal to the increasing nu
