A recurring theme throughout the book of Psalms is a declaration of God’s reign over all the nations of the earth. Have you ever received news so good you felt like you would explode? If your life had been a musical, you would have burst into song! If so, you have also likely had the opposite experience. Times when the burdens of life seemed so heavy that you were desperate for someone else to help carry the load. Times when the song in the musical of your life would have been in a minor key. Many of the Psalms are testimonies of joy and sadness, hope and despair. Authentic worshippers do not try to hide their thoughts and feelings from God, but neither do they accept their feelings as ultimate truth. Instead, they lay them all before God and invite Him to speak truth and healing into their hearts. Edgar Allan Poe’s famous short story, “The Tell-Tale Heart,” describes the tortured mind of someone who has committed a horrible crime. His secret is eating him alive and driving him insane. Secret sin has that effect on the human heart. Because we are created in the image of God, our hearts are not designed to hold onto sin. When we try to keep sin a secret, we suffer physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences. The Bible begins with a description of God’s creation and man’s call to steward and care for it. So what does that mean for Christians today? What is the biblical view of creation and the environment? Throughout history people have, on the one hand, confused creation with the Creator, and on the other, ignored God’s call to care for the world He has given us. Road trips are always more fun when you travel with people you love. For three years, Jesus and His followers traveled together throughout the Judean countryside. Along the way, the disciples learned a lot about each other and God’s Kingdom. Throughout the New Testament, believers worked together to serve the church and accomplish God’s will. It is in community that God reveals His plans and purpose. In part four of Walk This Way, we look at the importance of community in understanding who we are and what we are called to do.

It’s one thing to know God’s will and another to do it! One of Jesus earliest disciples said, “I know the good I ought to do, but don’t do it. And the evil I shouldn’t do? Well, I just keep on doing it!” Can you relate? In part three of Walk This Way, we will explore the challenge and rewards of obedience, and how we can walk in it.

The ancient Hebrews taught that you should learn from your rabbi by “covering yourself in his dust.” This phrase might not mean as much in our world of concrete and asphalt, but to the ancient Jewish mind, it was a clear call to stick closely to the teachings of the rabbi you chose to follow. Rachel White is the Founder and Executive Director of Her Song Jacksonville. She is a licensed professional counselor and an ambassador and advocate for human trafficking survivors. Rachel has a long history of dedication to the well-being of women through ministry, spiritual care, and discipleship which she says marries beautifully with counseling. She naturally offers compassionate care to others and is the lead counselor for the women who come to Her Song, while also providing visionary leadership for the organization.

Dr. Jerry Haag serves as president and CEO of FBCH and One More Child – a leading child welfare agency that provides Christ-centered services to meet the needs of hungry children, trafficked children, foster children, single moms and struggling families. Under Dr. Haag’s leadership, FBCH and One More Child have increased from serving 3,351 children and individuals in 2007 to impacting 249,044 in 2018. Major League baseball teams play 162 games during the regular season. Eighty-one games are played “away” and another 81 are played at home. Since 2004 the average MLB baseball team has won 54% percent of their home games. This “Home Field Advantage” comes, in part, because the host team has a better knowledge of the field and a friendly crowd cheering them on. But imagine if a baseball team only won games on the road and lost all of their home games. It wouldn’t take long for the crowd to thin out and the players to begin dreading coming home. This describes how many people feel as they drive home from work. They are winners in the workplace but feel like they are always losing at home. This may be, in part, because while we focus on leadership in the marketplace, we seldom apply those same principles of leadership at home.
