The incarnation didn’t just happen once upon a time a long time ago. When Jesus was preparing to leave His disciples, He promised them that the Holy Spirit would come and take up residence in their hearts, empowering them to carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth. This means that the incarnation continues in the lives of men and women fully submitted to God. We (the church) are now the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. Two-thousand years ago, at the birth of Jesus, the angels declared “Peace on earth, good will to men on whom God’s favor rests.” So why are we more anxious and depressed than ever? For many people there is at least one person they’d like to avoid at this year’s Christmas get-together. The reasons range from simple annoyances to serious offenses. At the announcement of Jesus’ birth, the angels’ proclaimed, “Peace on earth, good will toward people on whom God’s favor rests.” If Christmas is the celebration of God making peace with us, shouldn’t we be able to make peace with one another? Christmas is expensive! Analysts expect us to spend $920 per person on gifts in 2019. If they’re right, it will mean that holiday spending has increased every year since 2008 and will top $1 trillion for the first time ever! But an expensive Christmas is not the same as a meaningful Christmas. In fact, you may be spending a lot of money and only cheapening the true meaning of the season. Maybe we spend so much because we are trying to compensate for something that would cost us much more. It is easy to shop online and have Christmas arrive on your doorstep with free delivery. But Jesus’ delivery was anything but free to Mary and Joseph. These young political refugees had little in the way of worldly wealth, but their sacrifice is what made that first Christmas possible. Remember Black Friday before the internet? Waiting in lines to get those special after Thanksgiving deals? Even if you aren’t old enough to remember or aren’t a shopper, the concept of waiting in line is universal. It seems like we spend most of our lives waiting on something. We wait to get out of school, then we wait to find a Mr./Mrs. “Right”; we wait to start a family, then we wait for the kids to get a little older; we wait to retire and we wait to die… Life is one interminable waiting room! The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is called Advent. It is a season in which we remember a time when the world was waiting for the arrival of its Savior. A time to anticipate the celebration of the birth of Jesus and to prepare our hearts and homes to be His dwelling place. Join us as we explore God’s purpose behind waiting and how we can make the most out of it this Advent.

Before email and text messages, most written correspondence was done through letters. Unlike modern forms of communication, letters didn’t come with a thread of what had already been said by the other person. Reading another person’s letter only gives us a portion of the full story. Third John, the shortest book in the Bible, is more like a postcard written by John to a man named Gaius. While we can’t know everything that was going on in Gaius’s church, this little letter offers the modern church several important lessons.

In the state of New Mexico, there is a small town by the name of Truth or Consequences. The name change happened in 1950 to coincide with a game show hosted by Ralph Edwards. The residents of this town are the first to admit that after the name change, weird things began to happen daily. To this day the town is known as a "Weird Town with Weird Happenings."There was not a Truth or Consequences town or game show when Paul was writing his love letters to the Church. But there certainly were some weird things happening within the towns and churches. In his second letter, John is warning the believers that deceivers had gone out into the world and how they should watch themselves because of the falsehoods being spread about Jesus and His teachings. John is encouraging those believers to continue walking in Truth and Love or there will be serious consequences ahead. John's warning is just as important for us to hear today.
