As Jesus assembled His disciples, He was not looking for the religious credentials you might have expected. Instead, He called fishermen, tax collectors, political malcontents, and otherwise completely unremarkable people. Join us for part four of Jesus, Friend of Sinners as we explore how God chooses and uses a motley crew to reach a diverse world. 

If Jesus was a friend of sinners, then it stands to reason that people who follow Jesus should be friends of sinners, too. But how, exactly do we do that? Join us for part three of Jesus, Friend of Sinners as we see how four of Jesus’ earliest followers modeled the kind of friendship that can changes sinner into saints.  

Social distancing and mask mandates have made us all more aware of the potential for contamination. In Bible times, people who were infected with various diseases were required to yell, “Unclean!” as they made their way in public. Masks, social distancing, and yelling “unclean” are all motivated by the same idea -- unhealthy people contaminate healthy people. It doesn’t work the other way around. A sick person doesn’t get well because they are touched by a healthy person ... unless that person is Jesus. Join us for part two of Jesus, Friend of Sinners as we learn how Jesus reverses the polarity of sin, sickness, and death. 

Even the most basic reading of the Gospels tells us that Jesus was loved by sinners and repeatedly challenged and questioned by the religious people of His day. In fact, Jesus’ harshest words were not directed towards people far from God, but rather to those who claimed to be the closest. Then why does it seem like the church caters to the religious and resists the “sinners” of our day? Why do sinners often resist the church and Jesus’ followers if Jesus was such a friend to sinners? Join us for part one of Jesus, Friend of Sinners, where we will take a before and after look at a sinner who resisted and then ran toward Jesus.  

After preaching His first public sermon and performing a couple of miracles, word about Jesus spread throughout Galilee. He was just beginning to draw larger crowds when, after a time of solitude, Jesus suddenly announced that He was leaving for other towns. Join us for part six of Inception where we see the circumstances that led Jesus to leave His hometown in pursuit of God’s ultimate mission to save the world. 

When Nazareth’s favorite son showed up to preach His first public sermon, He received a lot of support from the crowd. But Jesus quickly moved from hero to zero when His friends and neighbors threatened to kill Him for something He said. What turned Jesus’ hometown crowd against Him? Join us for part five of Inception to learn how embracing God’s mission challenges our preconceived notions and reveals hidden biases.  

Nothing makes us aware of the power of temptation more than a determination to avoid temptation. Start a diet and suddenly everything not on your diet becomes a temptation. Make the decision to stop a habit or abstain from something and suddenly the thing that you are trying to avoid has a power that it didn’t seem to have before. Join us for part four of Inception where we learn from Jesus that every temptation is an invitation for transformation.  

Genealogies are found throughout the Bible. Luke, being a good historian, included Jesus’ genealogy as part of his Gospel account. While these long lists of difficult to pronounce names are often overlooked in our Bible reading and study, it is important to understand why the Gospel writers and the early Christians thought they were so important. Join us for part three of Inception where we look at Jesus’ family tree to understand where Jesus comes from, who He is, and where He is going.  

How should followers of Jesus respond to the chaos and discord of the world around us? The launching of Jesus’ ministry offers us an unexpected answer. Join us for part two of Inception where we explore the message of Jesus’ cousin John and how that message and Jesus’ response helps us begin the process of changing the world around us.

The dictionary defines INCEPTIONS as “the beginning or starting point of an institution or activity.” Luke begins his Gospel with a description of Jesus’ birth and then, in chapters three and four, moves onto describe the inception – or starting point for His ministry. Join us for a six-week series exploring the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, how it foreshadowed the rest of His life and ministry, and what it tells His followers today.

The year 2020 has come to a close and 2021 is finally here. This Sunday we will look toward the future of Southside in our annual State of the Church message. Our theme is Above & Beyond, inspired by Ephesians 3:20-21. Highlight it in your bible. Memorize it. And come prepared to experience God above and beyond what you think, ask, or imagine in 2021. We want this to stay in your hearts and minds this year.

We are all ready to turn the page on 2020, hoping and praying that 2021 will be a better year! But with so many things out of our control, is there anything we can do to ensure that 2021 is a better year? “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6) Often when we hear the story of Mary and Joseph losing Jesus in the Temple we wonder about their parenting.
