This psalm, the only one in the collection titled A Psalm of Thanksgiving, invites the whole earth to know and worship God. Its powerful message encourages us to serve the Lord joyfully, recognize His eternal truth, and express our gratitude for His everlasting goodness.

The historical background for Psalm 51 thus is 2 Samuel 11-12. Psalm 51 is David's lament, where he cries out to God for deliverance from a life-threatening situation. The life-threatening situation is King David’s guilt over the taking of Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah. Psalm 51 is a heartfelt cry to God from one who has committed heinous sins against God.

Psalm 5 begins as a lament and ends with praise. David expresses his confidence that God will be his shield from the wicked and ungodly.

Have you ever noticed that Psalm 22 speaks of the Messiah's Cross, Psalm 23 speaks of the Messiah's Shepherd's Crook, and Psalm 24 speaks of the Messiah's crown? Bible scholars call Psalm 24 a processional celebrating the King's entrance into Zion. If this King of Glory is God Almighty, wouldn't it be wise to allow Him to enter the gates of our innermost being?

Psalm 2 makes a striking claim: in the face of various plots and conspiracies to break the shackles of God's sovereign control, God is not threatened in the least. In fact, God laughs at the futility of such endeavors. His Son, the Anointed King, will break them before they can break their shackles. Instead of rebelling, they should take refuge in His Son.

Pastor Josh finishes the series on Philippians. Paul thanks the Philippian church for its faithful financial support, and he promises them that God will supply all of their needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

This passage begins with a plea to Euodia and Syntyche to "agree with each other in the Lord." Bickering occurs when we are not rejoicing in the Lord and are anxious. We can alleviate our anxiety through prayer and setting our minds on things above. Where the mind dwells the heart follows.

If we want to be mature we have to walk after the mature. If we want to be observant, we have to walk with the observant. How our walk ends is determined by who we walk after and who we walk with.

In this passage, Paul explains why he is content but not complacent. Paul sometimes compared the rigors of athletic training to Christian growth and development challenges. He believed Christians should never become complacent with where they were in their spiritual development. Growth is the natural desire of the mature Christian.

In verses 1-11 of Philippians 3, Paul gives his pedigree in the flesh and then explains how worthless it is to him now because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ. He wants only to know Christ and the power of His resurrection.

The church at Philippi was no different than many churches today. There were nationality differences (Asian, Greek, and Roman). There were socio-economic differences (some were rich like Lydia, others were middle class like the jailor and most were poor) and there were generational differences. These differences could easily lead to misunderstandings and a lack of trust. How were they supposed to maintain unity? There was only one way and that was if Paul could convince them that whatever united them was greater than all that divided them. To move beyond their differences they had to have a common bond and a common purpose.

To have teamwork there must be a cooperative spirit rather than a competitive spirit. People have to be willing to lay aside their personal agendas to pursue a common goal. The Prophet Amos once asked the question, “Can two walk together unless they are agreed?” That is the same concept Paul has in mind here. We must stand firm in our agreement with the essential elements of the content of our faith. Without this basic agreement, we cannot move forward together to contend for the faith.

In this text, Paul considers the pros and cons of being released from prison to continue to serve the church versus being executed and gaining more of Christ. Ultimately he sees that continuing to serve here on earth benefits the church more than if he is executed. Paul decides it is what is better for the church that matters most so he is ready to stay here for "to live is Christ".

In today's message, Pastor Josh shares that Jesus advances His kingdom and one of the primary ways He advances His kingdom is through the trials and tribulations of the church that serve as a witness to the power of the gospel. A gospel so powerful it cannot even be thwarted by those who preach it from selfish ambition.
