  • Pulp Crazy Episode 75: With Dust Their Glittering Towers by Christopher Paul Carey

    28/07/2014 Duración: 07min

In this special edition I will be discussing "With Dust Their Glittering Towers" by Christopher Paul Carey. It is a short story that has been recently published in "The Many Tortures of Anthony Cardno" by Talekyn Press. The anthology is edited by Anthony Cardno and all stories feature a tuckerized version of him. All sales proceeds of "The Many Tortures of Anthony Cardno" go directly to the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. While Christopher Paul Carey's name is no stranger to pulp fans, we are shown a different style in "With Dust Their Glittering Towers". This is the first story in what Chris refers to as The Fly-Leaves cycle. It is a piece of historical fantasy set in Highgate, London during the Victorian Era. In this weeks episode I will be discussing "Sleuth Girl" by Don George. It is a crime story that appeared in the June 1939 issue of Ten Detective Aces. The story is only two pages long and I read it off of the PulpGen website. The story focuses on Detective Wilcy Whitaker and his partner the titular Sleuth Girl. The two of them are in a park undercover, trying to draw out a criminal known as the Prowler who has been robbing and murdering couples in the park. Assisting them is the woman's pet squirrel named Red. Visit http://pulpcrazy.com for the videocast.

  • Pulp Crazy Episode 73: The Shadow #0

    20/07/2014 Duración: 06min

In this weeks episode I will be discussing The Shadow #0 published by Dynamite Entertainment. This issue came into comic shops this week and features The Shadow training with Harry Houdini. The issue is written by Cullen Bunn and illustrated by Colton Worley. Marc Rueda provided the colors and Rob Steen was the letterer. The issue takes place in two separate time periods. One portion is set in New York City in 1925 with Lamont Cranston being trained in the art of escape by Harry Houdini. Another portion takes place in Los Angeles in 1936 with The Shadow venturing into the lair of the Society of United Magicians to save Houdini's kidnapped widow, Bess. Combining The Shadow and Houdini is a great idea. Walter Gibson, the creator of the pulp Shadow was a magician himself and ghost wrote for Houdini. Houdini himself was also a credited pulp writer. He is credited for writing the story Under the Pyramids for the 50th Anniversary issue of Weird Tales. In reality this was ghost written by H.P. Lovecraft based on an

  • Pulp Crazy Episode 71: Ignition City

    20/07/2014 Duración: 07min

In this weeks episode I will be discussing Ignition City. It is a alternate history science fiction comic book mini series that was published in 2009 by Avatar Press. The five issue mini series was written by Warren Ellis, illustrated by Gianluca Pagliarani, inked by Chris Dier and colored by Digikore Studios. The series is also available in trade paperback, hardcover or digital. The series is set in 1956, in Ignition City, the last space port on Earth on an island located along the equator. Pulp fans will be interested in the series due to the cast being analogues of the great science fiction characters of yesterday. Analogues for Flash Gordon, Dale Arden, Doctor Hans Zarkov and Ming the Merciless are present, as well as Buck Rogers, an antagonist wearing Commando Cody's rocket pack and helmet, and a former Lensman.Visit http://pulpcrazy.com for the videocast.

  • Pulp Crazy Episode 70: Nyarlathotep by H.P. Lovecraft

    20/07/2014 Duración: 13min

In this weeks episode I will be discussing Nyarlathotep, a prose poem by H.P. Lovecraft. It is a piece of weird fiction based around Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos who is a very popular Cthulhu Mythos deity. Lovecraft first wrote the story in 1920 and it was published that same year in the United Amateur. Nyarlothotep is a Cthulhu Mythos deity that walks among us and has done so for years, although he has done so in many forms. In this original prose poem he is depicted as a traveling showman visiting a city. Needless to say the city and its people will not be the same. An audio reading courtesy of Archive.org is included in the episode.Visit http://pulpcrazy.com for the videocast.

  • Pulp Crazy Episode 69: Mimic by Donald A. Wollheim

In this weeks episode I will be discussing Mimic by Donald A. Wollheim. Mimic is a short story that first appeared in the December 1942 issue of Astonishing Stories. Mimic served as the inspiration for the 1997 film of the same name directed by Guillermo Del Toro and starring Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam and Josh Brolin. The short story is only a little over 2 pages in length, so the film expands upon the concepts introduced in Wollheim's short story. Visit http://pulpcrazy.com for the videocast.

I would like to thank David Drage, AKA Ironmammoth for allowing me to use his reading of The Cairn on the Headland. Visit http://pulpcrazy.com for the videocast.

  • Pulp Crazy Episode 65: A Night in Malneant by Clark Ashton Smith

    27/05/2014 Duración: 26min

In this weeks episode I will be discussing A Night in Malneant by Clark Ashton Smith. It is a short story that was first published in June 1933, in a collection titled The Double Shadow and Other Fantasties, which Smith published himself. The story would later be reprinted in the September 1939 issue of Weird Tales. This is not part of any particular cycle within Smiths body of work, it is a stand alone Weird Fantasy story. It deals with a nameless narrator who wanders into the gothic city of Malneant and spends an unusual mist shrouded night there as his past appears to catch up with him. It is a pretty interesting story and is wonderfully told. Thanks to the generosity of Will Hart, aka CtulhuWho1, I have included a recording of noted fantasy writer Fritz Leiber reading the story from the 3rd World Fantasy Convention on October 29, 1977 in Los Angeles, California, where Clark Ashton Smith was the theme. Will was in attendance for the reading and thanks to him it will last forever. Be sure to check out Wills

    09/05/2014 Duración: 16min

In this weeks episode I will be discussing a short story by Philip Jose Farmer that I have recently finished reading. The story is called Savage Shadow and as you can guess from the title it fits into the body of work known as his pulp period. It was originally published in 1977 in the pages of Weird Heroes #8, a new pulp series of books put together by Byron Preiss Visual Productions and published by Pyramid/Jove/HBJ. It was later reprinted in Pearls From Peoria in 2006, a hardcover collection of Farmer's writing edited by Paul Spiteri and published by Subterranean Press. In addition to the Savage Shadow, an article written by Farmer titled The Grant-Robeson Papers is included in both books and serves as a Foreword to Savage Shadow. Savage Shadow was to be the first in a series of stories that Farmer dubbed The Grant-Robeson Papers. Visit http://pulpcrazy.com for the videocast.

  • Pulp Crazy Episode 61: The Wild Man by Octavus Roy Cohen

    23/04/2014 Duración: 04min

In this weeks episode I will be discussing The Wild Man by Octavus Roy Cohen. It first appeared in the August 28, 1915 issue of All-Story. The Wild Man is a piece of short sports fiction, focusing on the rivalry of two professional baseball players. The two men are Pat Nelligan and Bill Davis. Pat Nelligan is a square jawed no nonsense back up catcher who plays for the Panthers, a west coast team that appears to be fictional. Bill Davis, the titular Wild Man, is a star base runner who has a reputation of spiking people whenever he can when running the bases. He plays for the Reds, presumably the Cincinatti Reds.
