The Arts Report on CiTR brings you the latest and upcoming in local arts in Vancouver from a volunteer run team that likes to get weird! Based primarily in Vancouver, BC, your show hosts (Ashley and Jake) are on the airwaves on CiTR Radio 101.9FM, Wednesdays from 5-6pm.     We started off today's show with an interview Serra did with Megan Majewski about her upcoming exhibition "Fire Followers" at the UBC Beaty Biodiversity museum and her artist participation in the Annual Eastside Culture Crawl. After this interview, we had a bunch of reviews! First up was Eva's review of Heart of the City Festival, she even gave some of her picks of upcoming events in the festival you can check out! Right after was Serra's review of Studio 58's Risky Nights-Fort, specifically the two rooms The Shame Spiral and Political Party. We continued our show with Niko's review of Vancouver Opera's La Voix Humaine. Finally, we finished off with a review that Serra did of The Arts Club Theatre Company's Buffoon.     This week's show featured 2 interviews! We started with Niko's interview with Sarah Klassen. After a quick ad and psa break, our new correspondent Eva had her interview with Black Pontiac! Their new single "Soda Pop Rock" is out and you can listen to it on spotify and apple music. We finished our show with Serra's quick review of Farouche which was part of the Vancouver International Dance Festival.   • Let's Slow it Down a Bit

    Today's show is a little calmer, a little slower. Life has been hectic so we thought we could slow it down for this week a bit. We started off Serra's interview with Donna Giraud about her new art show "Together is Always Better". We took a quick ad and psa break and continued with Niko's review of "Suitcase Stories" (going on until the 25th!) and Serra gave some information about the Museum of Vancouver's discounted rates until the end of 2020. After our second quick ad and psa break, Silvana did her review of The Polygon Gallery's "The Third Realm". Serra finished the show by letting everyone know that WIFTV submissions are open until November 20th and talked about the Vancouver Art Gallery's media preview that she attended which was about their current exhibition of Victor Vasarely.

    We started off this week's show with an interview that Niko did with Paul Armstrong who is the executive director of Crazy8s. After that, we had two very positive reviews. First one being Serra's review on Studio 58's "The Doll's House Project". Serra actually interviewed one of the actors in this production, Sierra Haynes, so make sure to check out last week's episode for that! After Serra, Silvana did her review on "Brother, I Cry" which was part of VIFF. Fun fact, Serra also did an interview with Jessie Anthony who is the writer, producer and director of Brother, I Cry. If you want to listen to that interview, it's on the episode of September 30th! We finished off the show with some shout-outs to the Discover Dance Series, to VIDF Livestreams and lastly to VSFF Call for submissions. Submit your short film until the 16th!

    This week's episode was filled with reviews! We started off the show with an interview with Sierra Haynes about The Doll's House Project that's being put on by Studio 58. Register online for free and get the viewing link on October 10th! After the interview, our new correspondents Niko and Phoebe did their review of Emerge: Studio Visit with Tania Willard that was done over zoom. Right after our new correspondents, our returning correspondent Silvana reviewed the documentary "My Name is Pedro". During the last 20 minutes of the show, Serra had her reviews of Fakeknot-HINKYPUNK that was part of VIDF and also The Arts Club Theatre Company's "No Child..."

    Welcome back everyone! We had a great summer break but now it's time to report on some local art. We kicked off today's episode with an interview with Jessie Anthony who is the writer, director and producer of the movie "Brother, I Cry" which you can catch on VIFF until October 7th. After this incredible interview, Serra reviewed Kokoro Dance's "Reading the Bones" which was livestreamed as part of VIDF. The rest of today's show was filled with shout-outs. We mentioned the festivals VIDF, Vancouver Improv Festical and VIFF. We also talked about Crazy8s for which submissions are now open! Last but not least, we finished off today's show by letting you know that "This Beautiful Day" by Kristin McIver returned to Squamish as part of the Vancouver Biennale and also that the Polygon Gallery has tours for "Third Realm" every Saturday!

    We started today's episode with an amazing interview with the lovely Sloan Thompson. She is the director of Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. and she gave us a sneak peak into this modern play that is opening tomorrow night at the Frederick Wood Theatre. We will also be doing a ticket giveaway for this show so keep an eye out for that! We followed that with another great interview with one of the cast members, Samantha Symington, of Trans Scripts, Part I: The Women. This award-winning work stars seven local transgender powerhouses, and is compiled from interviews with more than 70 transgender women in six different countries. We also had Sophie Mueler's debut as one of our new reporters with a review of The Grunt Gallery. This was a packed show, but I promise it is worth a listen. To end the show we had two reviews of two very different performances. First The Wedding Party, a comedy being put on by the Arts Club, and then Ballet BC's Romeo and Juliet.

  • Get Ready for Some Dance

    We started our show by talking about Inheritance: a choose-your-adventure ( a pick-the-path) experience and we also had the chance to talk with Eugene Crain about it. After listening to this amazing interview, we introduced Riot Girls, a feature film that will be screening in the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival. Continued with an interview with Lauren Grant who is the producer of Riot Girls, we found out that she will be holding a Script to Screen workshop for the festival! After a quick ad and psa break, we came back with a shout-out to Broken Tailbone which is being featured in Boca del Lupo. In Broken Tailbone, Carmen Aguirre leads a public Latin American dance lesson, woven with hilarious stories of her experiences in the hidden world of dance halls in Canada. We finished the show with talking about even more dance, the Vancouver International Dance Festival that's coming up this weekend!

    We started the show with an interview with Tom Whalen the curator of Lucky's Lounge. They are still accepting submissions until March 4th so this is your chance to display your self-published zine. We followed that by a few dance shout-outs to Coast Dance Festival and Grupo Corpo, which we will be reviewing next week. After our ad and PSA break we had Serra's review of Gruesome Playground Injuries with Niklas, one of our new members! The review was followed by Lua's review of Cipher. We concluded the show with a preview of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.

  • Fundrive!

    Today's show was a special one because we are promoting our annual fundraiser, Fundrive! This year's theme is Crush. Do you have a crush on CiTR? You can show your love by donating so that we can keep doing what we're doing for you with the same great and even better quality! We started out our show today by talking about Fundrive and the amazing prizes you can win if you pledge to our show when donating. After Fundrive, we listened to an interview with one of the creators of CLEO-A giant clitoris puppet learning to love herself. After hearing about the hilarious Cleo, we shouted out some cool events that are happening: The Talking Stick Festival and then The Coastal Dance Festival and lastly Gruesome Playground Injuries. After the shout-outs we listened to a pre-recorded interview that Serra did with Jaime Piercy who is playing Shelby in Boone Dog Production's Steel Magnolias. Last but not least, Lua did a review of Anywhere but Here and we finished off by reminding you of Fundrive!

    Today's show was hosted by Serra. She started the show with interview with the director and cast of the shows we later reviewed (or are going to review)! First Serra talked to the director of Urinetown: The Musical, Courtenay Dobbie, who gave us a cool insight into why Urinetown is such a cool and important musical. Then we heard from Christine Quintana, who is part of the cast of Anywhere but Here. This is a show about immigration that we are going to talk more about on the following week. Gruesome Playground Injuries received a shout-out for its cool approach to theatre, and we followed that with the actual review of Urinetown: The Musical and Noises Off ( a comedy put on by the Arts Club - it was HILARIOUS). The show ended with Serra's review of FRONTERA, which is a beautiful dance spectacle part of the PuSH festival.

  • Intense plays all around

    We started the show with an interview with the lovely Luciana Silvestre Fernandes who is the Director of The Changeling now on at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. The play discussed has mentions of sexual violence, among other things. It is definitely not suitable for younger audiences. We talked a little more about set design, costume, and overall effect of the play after the interview. Then, listened to a pre-recorded interview with the bassist of Fly Pan Am who are playing live for FRONTERA. After a quick break, we reminded everyone of FUNDRIVE and we finally revealed all the prizes you can receive when donating if you mention our show! To end the show on a high note we reviewed Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story.

  • The first of the decade!

    Welcome back to the Arts Report. On today's show we talked a little about what the PuSh Festival is and what we will be covering. We then heard an interview with one of the actors of Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story, Ben Caplan. After some ads and PSAs we highlighted the importance of Fundrive and some cool stuff that you can get when you donate certain amounts! We then talked about MOA and its importance, but better yet about their new-ish/current exhibition Playing with Fire: Ceramics of the Extraordinary. Spoiler alert: it is extraordinary! We then did an overview of a few different shows happening this and next week including: BERLIN: The Last Cabaret, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, the Reel Causes presents Dosed at SFU Woodward's, and the super fin SMASH Comedy Festival. We finished the show with a reminder that the 3rd Annual Siloam Theatre Festival has open calls for artists until March.

  • Last show of the decade

    We started the show with a few shout-outs to Shiny Fuzzy Muddy ( a crafts market happening Dec 14-15), Graham Clark's 24hr Stand-up Comedy Show (happening Nov 29-30), and It's a Wonderful Christmas-ish Holiday Miracle (starting tonight). We followed that with a review of Hedda Gabler, and interviews. One with the cast of O Christmas Tea, a comedy show happening next week, and Cariboo Magi, a genre bending style play. We ended the show with our farewells, and a review of the opera Gianni Schicchi produced by Opera Mariposa.

  • So much stuff, so little time

    We started the show talking about a number of cool events happening all over the city including, the Vancouver Christmas Market, Hedda Gabler, Toque, FUSE x CURRENT Art Bar, and a number of events relating to Trans Day of Remembrance. We then had a review of Orquesta Akokan by Silvana, the play Anon(ymous) by Lua and the Sound of Music by Lua and Serra.

    We started the show with an interview with Sevan Kochkarian who is one of the lead in the opera GIANNI SCHICCHI being put on by Opera Mariposa. We then had a review of Timothy Findley’s The Wars adapted by Dennis Garnhum, followed by two reviews of Certified, an amazing one-woman show, and Turn of the Screw, a great example of horror theatre. We ended the show with an interview Made in BC dancer Leah 'McFly' McKesey and a review of The Price being put on be the United Players Club.

  • Hanging on to Halloween

    Hello! On today's show we started with an interview that was meant to be aired the week before with the director of the documentary Be Afraid: The Science of Fear. It is a very cool film and it can be found on the CBC's free streaming service. We then an interview with the director of The Turn of the Screw. We are also going to be reviewing this spooky play on our next show. We did a bunch of shout-outs including, to VTFF (which we are doing a tickets giveaway for!), Certified, Vancouver Tap Dance Society. We ended the show with a review of the Paco de Lucia tribute and of the Out of Concealment exhibition at the Bill Reid Gallery.

  • Writer's Fest!

    We started the show with an interview with Connor Riopel who is part of the cast for Timothy Findley’s The Wars adapted by Dennis Garnhum playing at the Frederic Wood Theatre.   • Opera, dance and theatre

    In today's show we started with a review by Serra of the dance performance Spooky Action. We then had an interview with the Artistic Director of DanceHouse, Jim Smith. Serena followed that with a review of La Traviata, and we ended the show with a review of The Cost of Living, and a few shout-outs to First Pick Home Decor Event, Out of Concealment gallery exhibition at the Bill Reid Gallery and Hold These Truths, a single men show.

  • VIFF Recap

    We started teh show with Serra's review of the VIFF film Marriage Story and a few shoutouts to First Pick Handmade Home Decor, and the dance show Spooky Action. We then had an interview with Sarah Leavitt about her new graphic novel: Agnes, Murderess which was a fascinating read. And we ended the show with a number of film reviews recapping VIFF, including Mr Jones, The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao, Extra Ordinary. And right before we ended we reminded everyone that Vancouver Opera's promotion of $40 under 40 is still going with a few tickets left so make sure to get yours!
