Episode 264: "Cool Ends": The Best Beatles Song Endings
16/04/2026 Duración: 32minIn this episode, Dave and Chris explore the many ways the Beatles end their songs — from dramatic codas and long fade-outs to chaotic jams, unexpected chord shifts, and of course, studio histrionics. The Beatles have many "cool ends" to go along with their "hot starts!" We cover some of the famous endings in tracks like "A Day in the Life," "Hey Jude," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "I Am the Walrus," as well as some tunes that you may not expect. As always, we also discuss the latest Beatles news. Enjoy! Want to purchase any items discussed in this episode? Episode 261: Songs under the Microscope, Vol. 36 -- "Act Naturally"
28/02/2026 Duración: 33minIn this episode we trace the life of "Act Naturally": written by Johnny Russell and Voni Morrison, turned into a hit by Buck Owens, and later covered by the Beatles with Ringo Starr on vocals. 09/02/2026 Duración: 01h12minIn this episode, we discuss what makes rock music "psychedelic" and debate the Beatles songs that best capture the era’s "trippy" sounds. Episode 259: Famous Covers - Elton John, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "One Day At A Time"
19/01/2026 Duración: 15minHappy 2026! In this new occasional series "Famous Covers," we'll explore some of the most successful Beatles and solo artist covers from a wide range of musicians. The first entry features a 1975 double-sided single by Elton John, covering two John Lennon-penned songs - "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and "One Day At A Time." Elton stays largely faithful to the original recordings, but puts his own spin on the tracks. John Lennon himself contributed guitar and background vocals on Elton's version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and played guitar on "One Day At A Time." So which Elton John cover do we like better - his take on the psychedelic "Lucy In The Sky" or the more introspective "One Day At A Time?" Episode 255: Review of "Power To The People: Live At the One To One Concerts"
30/10/2025 Duración: 57minWe are back after a hiatus to discuss the new release of the "One to One" concert from 1972 featuring John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Elephant's Memory. This concert appears in a beautifully remixed version that substantially improves over the 1986 John Lennon: Live in New York City release. But how does the concert hold up all these years later, and what about the set list, performances, and political messaging? We dig into all of it! Because only the concert was available on streaming (as of the time of recording), we do not discuss the other parts of the Power to the People box set, but we plan to do that as discs get released over the next few months. Long overlooked and still awaiting a super deluxe reissue—alongside London Town—this record has become a fan favorite in recent years. But is it a hidden gem or rightfully criticized? Episode 248: Beatles "Friends" -- Allen Klein
21/04/2025 Duración: 01h01minApart from Yoko Ono, probably no other figure in the Beatles story is as divisive and hated as much as Allen Klein. Klein was brought into clean up the business disaster that was Apple, and to get a better contract and more money for the Beatles. After his work with Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, and others, the Beatles gave Klein a chance to improve their finances in 1969-70, with agreements that lasted for the next several years. In this episode, we dig into the background of Allen Klein, his rise to prominence, his work with The Rolling Stones, and of course shine an extensive light on his rise and fall with the Beatles as a group and as solo artists. Is he really the villain we've been led to believe he was? Or did he do some good things for the group? Listen and find out!
