On this First Sunday of Advent the readings invite us to vigilance. Rather than being hypervigilant, though, what if Jesus' invitation to "Wait" and to "Be Alert" is really an invitation to pray? Perhaps this Advent we can take some time to find the Lord where he comes everyday: in the silence and stillness of our hearts. The Resurrection is a line in the sand. Either Jesus was raised from the dead, or our faith is in vain. Though it is right to imitate the saints in their earthly example, narrated in their biographies and journals, it is also necessary (and perhaps more urgent) to imitate them in their current activity. The saints, right now, in heaven, are resting in the Lord. What does it mean to rest well? Rather than focusing this All Saints Day on how much more work we need to do to bring about the Kingdom, perhaps we would do well to imitate the saints in Glory who have found their eternal rest. They also muse on how to best prepare their homilies, navigating the tension between writing their homilies on the one hand, and going completely off-the-cuff on the other. The vineyard theme continues this week in the parable of the two sons who are sent to work by their father. What is on full display, though, is not their actions or intentions, but the change of mind that accompanies a true conversion. In the end, the only antidote to ideology is to have a change of mind, and to be conformed to Christ.
