The Ten Commandments and the Cleansing of the Temple make one thing clear: We are invited to live in God's house as his children, according to his commands and his wisdom. This week we consider the connection between the Baptism of Jesus, his Transfiguration, and eventual death on the Cross prefigured by the sacrifice of Abraham. These three events in the life of Christ are all connected by the revelation of Jesus's sonship to the Father. As we continue Lent, we would do well to internalize the Pasachal Mystery as part of our own relation to God as sons and daughters. This last Sunday in Ordinary Time (before Lent) invites us to consider Jesus's power to heal us. Will you go to confession to respond to this invitation? Will you receive the medicine of our salvation in the sacrament of the Eucharist? In these last few days of Ordinary Time we can be thinking of how Lent will be a special time of renewal and healing for those who seek the Lord. Often we think of preaching as a special time for a learned teacher to offer pearls of wisdom to those who are interested, when in truth preaching is an act of the Holy Spirit that moves through the preacher to communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ. With such a noble end, woe to us if we do not allow the Spirit to work in us with such power. What does it mean to call Jesus "Lord"? In today's readings we consider the impact of "trying to make it on our own" without recognizing Jesus's authority over us. In the end, this may be the source of all of our anxieties. Like last week, the readings present the call of the disciples. This time, though, the focus is on the urgent need to respond to God's call. It is true, God is patient, but we are invited to respond with diliegence. The question is not whether God will call you, but how and to what. Too often we respond with generosity, but are told "that's not how we do things". God is always inviting us to respond with newness and life. With today's readings we pause to consider how God is calling us to be creative and zealous in our response to his invitation. Like Christmas, the feast of the Epiphany is not just an invitation to remember a past event. It is also an invitation to encounter the risen Lord in the same way as those priviliged to be with him in his first coming. Those of us awaiting his return are also able to visit him and encounter his divinity ... if we're willing to make the journey. Do we treat everyone as family? Or, are there still strangers among us? After two weeks of "preparing the way" with John the Baptist, this week we are given the figure of the Blessed Mother. After preparing the way of the Lord, are we able to be surprised by the Lord? Perhaps, like Mary, God is planning to come into your life in a new and beautiful way. Prepare the way, but be ready for anything. We have a repeat appearance this week of St. John the Baptist. This week, though, he defends himself against the temptation to make of himself equal to Christ. Here we see him overcoming the voice of deception by "testing the spirits". If we are to be holy, we must test everything, choosing only that which conduces to Christ increasing, and us decreasing.
