  • 379: Working Hard Just to Be Normal

    05/09/2018 Duración: 01h37min

If you feel like you're treading water, barely keeping your head above the surface, and struggling just to get by, you're not alone. If you feel like everyone else has it all figured out, and you're the only one who doesn't have their stuff together, you're not alone. If you feel like you're behind and you should be further along in your life, career, relationships, and success by now, you're not alone. I find that most people I talk to feel like they are behind in some way. It seems like everyone has it figured out by now and you're the only one who's working hard just to be normal. You're burning yourself out just to get to what you feel like would be par for the course. That's how far behind you are. But it's not true. It's not true that everyone has it figured out. In fact, most people feel the way you do (myself included). It's not true that you don't have a lot of things together—you do. I want to reset your perspective today. We talk about how social media is distorting reality, how so few people

  • 378: Seventh Week Sabbatical

    29/08/2018 Duración: 01h18min

I was so burned out, I didn’t even know I was burned out until six months after the fact. That’s a story for another day, but I’ll tell you this much: burnout isn't pretty. You can't afford burnout. • You think you’re saving time by pushing yourself. • You think you’re preventing problems by overworking. • You think you’re getting more done by grinding harder. But the time you will lose by being burned out is a million times worse than the time you think you’ll lose now. In 2014, I started taking Seventh Week Sabbaticals. I work six weeks and take off every seventh week. I also pay my employees to take off every seventh week. We don’t have “unlimited time off”, we have mandatory time off. It is my mission, by 2047, to get every company in the world to pay their employees to take off every seventh week. That's the goal with my next book: Seventh Week Sabbatical. Read my next book as it's being written at sabbatical.blog.

  • 377: How to Be More Confident

    22/08/2018 Duración: 01h53min

Do you question yourself a lot? Do you wonder why you don't have things figured out? Why aren't you more confident? These thoughts can run rampant through your mind and repeat themselves over and over. How you think about feel about yourself affects how you act. How you act determines a lot—including how successful you are in life. We know successful people are confident, but that can make it feel like a "chicken and egg" problem. That's great for successful people, you say, but what if I'm not already confident? How can I become more confident? We all have areas of our lives where we feel confident. We also all have areas of our lives where we lack self-confidence. This is natural, for we can't have all experiences. • You may be good at drawing but not at cooking. • You may be good at cooking, but not at writing. • You may be good at writing, but not at rock climbing. This is okay! But how do we manage the way we think about ourselves, and what we say, in areas where we have no experience? How do we fe

  • 376: 30 Days Without Video Games

    15/08/2018 Duración: 29min

Hey, it’s Sean McCabe with a mini sabbatical episode. Long-time listeners know I take Seventh Week Sabbaticals, and have since 2014. When I take off that seventh week, I could just take a break from the podcast and have no episode go out on the feed. But the reason I do these mini sabbatical episodes is to remind you of the importance of rest. My hope is that when you hear me talk about being on sabbatical, you think about the importance of rest. Now, I don’t always talk about sabbaticals on these mini sabbatical episodes. Often, I’ll talk about a random topic that may touch on rest in some way. But I’ve wanted to share more on the topic of sabbaticals. That is what my next book is going to be about. So I’m excited to share a new place I’ll be doing just that, and I’ll tell you where to go at the end of today’s episode. I’m actually recording today’s mini sabbatical episode on the day it publishes. I’m in the middle of a 30-day challenge, and I wanted to wait until I had a few days under my belt so I could

  • 375: 3-Month Guide to Waking Up at 6am Consistently

    08/08/2018 Duración: 01h50min

What if the most important thing of your day was the first thing you did? For me, that thing is writing. Writing is the seed of everything that I do. It all starts with writing. I was a night owl all of my life. I hated waking up early. So why did I change? One day, I decided to log my output and run a test: do I write more at night or do I write more in the morning? After several weeks, I had the data in front of me: I wrote twice as much in the morning. Okay, so obviously I'd get results if I woke up early. But we still had a problem: I hated waking up early. How do you wake up early when you feel like it isn't something that comes naturally to you? Good news: waking up doesn't come naturally to me either! But I've developed a system that works. I made a 3-month guide to waking up at 6am consistently that I share with you in today's show. I'll also share 5 tips for getting out of bed at 6am.

  • 374: Building Your Personal Brand on Social Media in 2018 (Part 2 of 2)

    01/08/2018 Duración: 01h07min

Welcome to Part 2 of our series on building your personal brand on social media. In Part 1, we explained how you have a personal brand whether you like it or not—and ignoring it doesn't make it go away! In Part 2, we cover four major platforms (YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) get practical about how to develop your brand using video, audio, and written content. I break down the strengths of each platform as it pertains to video, audio, and written content. To help you visualize it, this is what we cover: • How to approach video content on YouTube. • How to approach audio content on YouTube. • How to approach written content on YouTube. • How to approach video content on Instagram. • How to approach audio content on Instagram. • How to approach written content on Instagram. • How to approach video content on Facebook. • How to approach audio content on Facebook. • How to approach written content on Facebook. • How to approach video content on Twitter. • How to approach audio content on Twitter.

  • 373: Building Your Personal Brand on Social Media in 2018 (Part 1 of 2)

    25/07/2018 Duración: 01h19min

Many people think "having a personal brand" means being that obnoxious person on social media who is full of themselves. Those people definitely exist. However, being obnoxious and having a personal brand are different things. Don't confuse the two! You have a personal brand whether you like it or not. It doesn't even matter whether or not you use the internet, post to social media, or have followers. You have a personal brand even with your small circle of friends. It's how and what they think about you when you're not in the room. It's how they talk about you with others. It's how they see you. • The friend who's always late to the party. • The host who takes care of everyone. • The shy, quiet person who keeps to themselves. Every one of your friends has a personal brand and so do you. You do not get to choose "whether or not to have a personal brand" any more than you get to choose "whether or not to have personal health". You shape it, or it shapes you. Today's episode is meant to help you underst

  • 372: Show Up Every Day

    18/07/2018 Duración: 01h42min

The key to success is to show up every day. You will not find a truly successful person who did not work hard. You have to put in the effort. The reason passion matters is because you won't show up to something you hate. You can't just love the idea of something, you have to fall in love with the process. Show up every day for two years. And it's not that there's something magical about two years necessarily, but things tend to click at that point. Two years is also the point at which you are likely to start seeing results. Don't expect to see results in the beginning, but know that the results will come in time. Things will never be perfect, but if you show up every day you will continually improve. Don't wait for motivation to start. Motivation is not a source but a result of doing. Showing up every day starts with a commitment, it's that simple. When you show up and trust the process, the motivation will come. Do something every day that gets you a little bit closer to your goal.

  • 371: My 2018 Craft + Commerce Conference Experience

    11/07/2018 Duración: 01h23min

Last year, I spoke at the first Craft + Commerce conference. My wife and I enjoyed the experience so much, we got tickets to go again this year. (Spoiler alert: we already bought our tickets for 2019!) I got to meet Casey Neistat. I'll tell you the story. We actually flew up to Boise, Idaho a few days early to do some hiking in the mountains (since we happened to be on a sabbatical week). That was wonderful. But even with the likes of Casey Neistat speaking, conferences like this, for me, are all about the people. It's the deep conversations over a meal or in the hallway that really leave an impression. I'll tell you all about that and more in today's show!

  • 370: Why We’re Giving Away All the Podcasts for Free

    04/07/2018 Duración: 01h07min

You may have heard in the last episode, we've made all of the podcasts free and publicly accessible. We already addressed and solved the issue of rewarding our loyal customers. Current Gold Members now have access to every program we've ever made inside their Vault. Past Master Class customers will receive over $1M in membership credit in total. The real question is: why are we doing this? People regularly say they have learned way more from the seanwes podcast than they did from college. The episodes are obviously incredibly valuable, so why give them away for free? It's a reasonable question. In fact, I asked myself the same question years ago and came to the conclusion that we should lock them all up in the Vault where people had to pay to access them. I don't fault my past self for coming to this conclusion. At the time, we'd built this massive content creation business (and team) around cranking out quality content in high volume. Only... we weren't making enough money. We also didn't monetize our

  • 369: Let’s Talk About IGTV

    27/06/2018 Duración: 11min

You've no doubt heard about Instagram launching their new long form video platform, IGTV. You can now publish videos up to 60 minutes long. IGTV is built in to the Instagram app, however there also a standalone IGTV app you can use to watch and upload videos... Portrait videos, that is. Yes, the platform is built entirely around portrait orientation videos. I was definitely skeptical at first (you might be too). But I've actually come to love it. It feels really natural. This is going to big BIG. There is a shift happening. People in the Community who have been thinking about starting a YouTube channel are now saying they're seizing this opportunity to embrace video and go all in on IGTV. It's an exciting time to get in at the ground level of an emerging new platform. The engagement I'm seeing is incredibly HIGH. Thousands of video views in a matter of hours. It's really something.

  • 368: What Happened on the Mastermind Retreat

    15/06/2018 Duración: 01h07min

I just got back from a mastermind retreat, and I'm feeling clarity unlike what I have in years. We are simplifying what we're doing significantly at seanwes. The feedback I received helped me realize just how complicated things are and how confusing it can be for someone looking for solutions. Unification. Everything is going to be simplified and clear. People who don't pay us money are going to get more value. People who pay us money are going to get even more value. The people who have paid us the most money will get the very best value. Finally, we as a team will have a simpler model, less stress, and greater focus. I'm incredibly excited to share what we're working on in today's show. In full disclosure, I actually was not planning to share any of this today. It's all still very fresh and in progress. However, I want to go back to our roots at seanwes. I want to iterate in public, document, and share the process. We're taking you along the journey. The things I talk about today are not yet a reali

  • 367: Rekindle Your Passion

    13/06/2018 Duración: 56min

Do you have a long lost passion you want to go back to? Sometimes burnout causes you to stop doing something you once loved, or maybe life just got in the way. But what are you truly passionate about? How can you be sure? How do you rekindle a passion from the past? Maybe it's the timing. Maybe it's the loss of interest. Maybe... just maybe... there's something still there.

  • 366: How to Stay Productive When Things Don’t Go According to Plan

    06/06/2018 Duración: 07min

I live in Texas where we're starting to get 100° days as summer is just around the corner. But no problem, right? That's why we have air conditioning. Well... until your air conditioning unit decides to stop working. That's what happened over the weekend. I had to cancel a class I was doing because it was too hot to record. But no problem, right? We'll just have someone out to fix the air conditioning unit! Well... until you realize that it just so happened to be a holiday and all the businesses are closed. If you've been to Texas before, you know that having a broken AC unit is no trivial thing. I won't exaggerate by saying it's a "life and death" matter, but it can be pretty miserable. We ended up sleeping downstairs on the couch where it was cooler. Today, Ben and I were scheduled to record our podcast like we normally do, but we ended up canceling. We're still trying to get someone out today to fix our air conditioning. Now, I'm sure by the time you hear this, everything will be fine, but I wante

  • 364: Breaking Down Client Meetings (Part 2 of 2)

    23/05/2018 Duración: 56min

We pick up from where we left off in Part 1: the middle of a client meeting role play. Ben had just finished pretending to be a "client from hell" and I'm about to demonstrate how to wrap up the client meeting professionally once I've recognized the red flag and decided to pass on the client. This episode produced some great "aha!" moments for people—things started to click. I think you're really going to get a lot out of being a fly on the wall.

  • 362: How to Take an Energizing 20-Minute Nap

    09/05/2018 Duración: 19min

I used to hate naps. I worked for a decade without ever taking a single nap. But now, I take naps on a regular bases. What changed? Why 20-minute naps? How did I go form someone who wasn't a "nap person" to someone who takes naps? Well, a few things changed: waking up at 4:30 AM consistently, my mindset around naps, and buying a $10 sleep mask. I share details about how I relax my mind, my thoughts, and my body to rest long enough to quickly rejuvenate in the middle of the day and avoid the early afternoon slump.

  • 361: The Right Questions to Ask in Your Client Questionnaire

    02/05/2018 Duración: 01h24min

You want great clients and you don't want bad clients. That's simple enough. But you can't convert bad clients into good clients. So how do you get the clients you want? The only way to get great clients is to filter the bad clients out. The way you filter is by using a questionnaire. A questionnaire is a form with a series of questions you ask potential clients before they are able to get in touch. Based on their replies, you can determine if it's worth your time to talk to them. You can learn a lot about someone by their answers to a few questions—but they need to be the right questions. In this show, we cover the right questions to ask on your questionnaire!
