Paul had been out of prison for several years, and visited many of the churches in Asia and Macedonia that he helped start. When he and Timothy returned to Ephesus, they found widespread false teaching in the church. Paul warned the Ephesian elders to be on guard against the false teachers who would inevitably come after he left. Paul sent Timothy to Ephesus to lead the church while he moved on to Macedonia. A few of the themes in the book of 1 Timothy are teaching sound doctrine, how to lead public worship, church leadership, personal discipleship, and caring for the church.
